Prayers for...

those preparing for ordination on Saturday, June 9, at 11 a.m., at St. Luke's Cathedral, Portland:  Stephanie Jane Batterman and Cynthia Louise Dawson to the Diaconate, and

the people of Emmanuel Lutheran Episcopal Church and the Bridging the Gap ministry (a recipient of a recent New Initiatives Fund grant from the Diocese of Maine) in Augusta as they struggle to find a home for their long-time ministries: Addie's Attic Clothing Bank, Everyday Basics Essentials Pantry, and the Augusta Warming Center.

The Kennebec Journal featured the dilemma in an article this week, "Augusta neighbors worry about homeless, mentally ill under social service plan."

Congratulations to ...

Around the Diocese...

Nominations for the Tenth Bishop of Maine open through May 30

The Discernment Committee its profile and opened the process for nominations and applications on May 3. Visit the bishop quest website for the profile as well as nomination and application forms at  www.bishopquest.me . The deadline for nominations is May 30 and applications must be received on June 4.

Do you know a priest who might consider joining in discernment with the Diocese of Maine? If so, please share the profile.

In 2007, Bishop Steve Lane offered good advice (in a mere 90 seconds) to a question thrown in at the end of the video interview when he was a nominee to be the Ninth Bishop of Maine. He was asked,   "So, why are you doing this?"

Commemorate Frances Perkins this Sunday

For her May 13 commemoration, the Episcopal Church has produced a bulletin insert for Maine's own saint, Frances Perkins. Perkins, whose family homestead is on the midcoast, was a lifelong member of St. Andrew's, Newcastle.

She was the first woman to serve in a presidential cabinet when she was tapped by FDR to be Secretary of Labor in 1932. A devout Episcopalian, whose faith informed her work in the public sphere, she is credited as the chief architect of the New Deal.

In addition to famously saying that "being a woman only bothered me in climbing trees," she said:

"Our idea of what constitutes social good has advanced with the procession of the ages, from those desperate times when just to keep body and soul together was an achievement, to the great present when 'good' includes an agreeable, stable civilization accessible to all, the opportunity of each to develop his particular genius, and the privilege of mutual usefulness."

Preach!

Check out books shared at Spring Training

At Spring Training, our diocesan education day, a number of people were asked to briefly share a book (or two) they recommend. Here, as promised, is a list of the books and links to where they may be purchased or check your local library or bookshop for availability.

If you attended Spring Training, there's still time to complete the brief evaluation. Your response will help organizers plan for next year. Thanks!

The Episcopal Asset Map needs your church's updates

Several years in the works and after much fine-tuning, The Episcopal Church and Episcopal Relief & Development have launched a much-improved interactive asset map of congregations and ministries across the Church. Learn more  in this story from Episcopal News Service .

The Diocese of Maine map has listed the basic information about each of our congregations and ministries but needs someone from each church to fill out a survey detailing what your church is up to as well as info about worship, ministries, disaster preparedness, and community partnerships. Why do this? Presiding Bishop Michael Curry explains it well here:

Click then scroll down a bit to the video

To update your church's page, visit www.episcopalassetmap.org, put your church's name and town in the search box. Click on the icon on the map, click the "More Details" button on the right sidebar, and then click the "Update this Place" button. It's easier than it sounds.

Upcoming in Maine and Beyond

Deacon Shield
Two opportunities in Maine to ask: What is a Deacon? How does one become a Deacon in the Episcopal Church in Maine?

Have you ever wondered what Deacons really do?  You might see them on Sunday morning, they might talk about opportunities to serve in the greater community, and they might even ask you to help.

Find out the answers to these questions and any other questions that you might have regarding the Diaconate at Deacon Discovery Days:

Saturday, May 12, at St. Patrick's, Brewer, and Saturday, May 19, at St. Mary's, Falmouth. Both events will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

If you have any questions, please contact Archdeacon Aaron Perkins at  [email protected] or text 207.752.3431.

All welcome for jazz (morning) and Evensong (afternoon) on Pentecost at St. John's, Bangor

Noted Jazz Singer on Pentecost
On  Sunday, May 20, we celebrate the Day of Pentecost when we remember the descent of the Holy Spirit of the Apostles. Noted jazz singer Alma Thomas, sang with retiring  St. John's Organists/Choirmaster Nancy and Robert Ludwig as a choir girl at Garden City's Cathedral of the Incarnation for seven years. She is now an important voice in the jazz scene in Rio de Janeiro, featured regularly with her "Divas in Jazz" show at The Blue Note. At the  10 am service on  May 20, Alma will sing and scat Duke Ellington's Come  Sunday between the Epistle and the Gospel.

Choral Evensong for the Feast of Pentecost
On Sunday, May 20, at 4 p.m., the St. John's Choir will be joined by choir alumni from St. John's as well as alumni from former choirs of retiring St. John's Organists/Choirmaster Nancy and Robert Ludwig. Music includes the St. Paul's Evening Service by Herbert Howells, William Mathias' festival anthem  Let the People Praise Thee , and a newly published set of Preces and Responses by Robert Ludwig.

Summer is coming...and so is the annual diocesan Adult Retreat at Camp Bishopwood

Where Do You Find God?,
a diocesan retreat - June 15-17

Join us for a weekend on beautiful Lake Megunticook, at Bishopswood near Camden, Maine.  The annual retreat is an opportunity to step away from the busyness of everyday life and be refreshed.

This year, we'll use Celtic and Ignatian resources to help us connect with Christ in nature, scripture, community, and the depths of our hearts. We'll seek to deepen our awareness of Jesus and open ourselves in generosity and compassion.  We'll also enjoy delicious home-cooked meals, the out-of-doors, campfires and the lake.

Check out the details, see what people are saying about past retreats, and register on the webpage

For more information, contact Jane Hartwell at jhartwell@episcopalmaine.org.   Click here for a flyer .

Click here for a bulletin insert to share with your congregation that highlights the adult retreat and Finale Camp for all ages to be held August 20-26. (It's in color but prints well in B&W.)

Paddling pilgrimages scheduled for 2018

In 2017 the seven Episcopal dioceses of New England, the Lutheran New England Synod, and Kairos Earth sponsored a 40-day, 400-mile pilgrimage the length of the Connecticut River called the River of Life Pilgrimage. The response was so great that three shorter pilgrimages have been scheduled for 2018, two in Rhode Island and one spanning the New Hampshire/Vermont border and into Massachusetts.

To learn more about the excellent leaders, Lisa and Mark, watch this New Hampshire Public TV segment (they are introduced at five minutes and 30 seconds). Diocesan staffer Heidi Shott wrote about her experience paddling a three-day segment of the 2017 pilgrimage in the New Northeast blog, "Praying with your eyes wide open."
