About 150 people from 38 congregations across Maine gathered for the third annual Spring Training, a diocesan education day, held on April 28 at South Parish Congregational Church in Augusta. It was a great day with 20 workshops to choose from (above: Thew Elliott of Trinity, Portland, leads a music workshop), worship, a word from Bishop Lane, book talks, and time to connect with other Maine Episcopalians engaged in ministry.

Nominations for the Tenth Bishop of Maine open through May 30
The Discernment Committee its profile and opened the process for nominations and applications on May 3. Visit the bishop quest website for the profile as well as nomination and application forms at

The deadline for nominations is May 30 and applications must be received on June 4.
Do you know a priest who might consider joining in discernment with the Diocese of Maine? If so, please share the profile.
In 2007, Bishop Steve Lane offered good advice (in a mere 90 seconds) to a question thrown in at the end of the video interview when he was a nominee to be the Ninth Bishop of Maine. He was asked,
"So, why are you doing this?"
Commemorate Frances Perkins this Sunday
For her May 13 commemoration, the Episcopal Church has produced a
bulletin insert for Maine's own saint, Frances Perkins. Perkins, whose
family homestead is on the midcoast, was a lifelong member of St. Andrew's, Newcastle.
She was the first woman to serve in a presidential cabinet when she was tapped by FDR to be Secretary of Labor in 1932. A devout Episcopalian, whose faith informed her work in the public sphere, she is credited as the chief architect of the New Deal.
In addition to famously saying that "being a woman only bothered me in climbing trees," she said:
"Our idea of what constitutes social good has advanced with the procession of the ages, from those desperate times when just to keep body and soul together was an achievement, to the great present when 'good' includes an agreeable, stable civilization accessible to all, the opportunity of each to develop his particular genius, and the privilege of mutual usefulness."

This is a great time for families to come and spend one or two nights and experience camp with their children. This weekend, highly recommended for kids attending Mini Camp or for firsttime campers, is a great opportunity for campers to learn the routines and try some of the fun activities, all with the comfort of their families. Diocese of Maine map has listed the basic information about each of our congregations and ministries but needs someone from each church to fill out a survey detailing what your church is up to as well as info about worship, ministries, disaster preparedness, and community partnerships. Why do this? Presiding Bishop Michael Curry explains it well here:

Episcopal Peace Fellowship - Maine Chapter to meet in Bath on May 19, All Welcome
There will be a meeting of EPF-Maine Chapter on Saturday, May 19, at Grace Episcopal Church in Bath, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please come and help plan our next steps in combatting gun violence and in seeking justice for Palestinians in today's world.
We welcome all who are interested in issues of peacemaking and hope you will join us. Members bring a simple contribution to an easy potluck lunch to share with others.

Sunday, May 20, we celebrate the Day of Pentecost when we remember the descent of the Holy Spirit of the Apostles. Noted jazz singer Alma Thomas, sang with retiring
St. John's Organists/Choirmaster Nancy and Robert Ludwig as a choir girl at Garden City's Cathedral of the Incarnation for seven years. She is now an important voice in the jazz scene in Rio de Janeiro, featured regularly with her "Divas in Jazz" show at The Blue Note. At the

May 20, Alma will sing and scat Duke Ellington's Come
Sunday between the Epistle and the Gospel.
Choral Evensong for the Feast of Pentecost

Where Do You Find God?,
a diocesan retreat - June 15-17
Join us for a weekend on beautiful Lake Megunticook, at Bishopswood near Camden, Maine. The annual retreat is an opportunity to step away from the busyness of everyday life and be refreshed.
This year, we'll use Celtic and Ignatian resources to help us connect with Christ in nature, scripture, community, and the depths of our hearts. We'll seek to deepen our awareness of Jesus and open ourselves in generosity and compassion. We'll also enjoy delicious home-cooked meals, the out-of-doors, campfires and the lake.

Paddling pilgrimages scheduled for 2018
In 2017 the seven Episcopal dioceses of New England, the Lutheran New England Synod, and Kairos Earth sponsored a 40-day, 400-mile pilgrimage the length of the Connecticut River called the River of Life Pilgrimage. The response was so great that three shorter pilgrimages have been scheduled for 2018, two in Rhode Island and one spanning the New Hampshire/Vermont border and into Massachusetts.

Youth Cabins at Summer Finale Week, August 20-26
It's almost summer, which means it's time to register for the Youth Cabins at Summer Finale Week.
Youth completing 6th-12th grade are invited to join youth from around Maine at Camp Bishopswood for a week of friends, fun and faith. We'll have dedicated, staffed youth cabins during Summer Finale Week, which runs from
August 20-26.
NEW: We are now offering $50 scholarships to all new campers, and have other scholarship money available to families who need it.
We can't wait to toast marshmallows, play in the gaga pit, worship in the great outdoors, and just generally have a great time at camp!
