The community that surrounds us is very caring and supportive. W
e truly enjoy sharing our news and updates with you all. We hope that you feel the connection as we work together to end abuse. In spite of how small our non-profit is we still manage to make a big difference in the lives of the women that we serve. The presence of WCH in Kenosha is strong because of the many people ready and willing to roll up their sleeves and play a part in this endeavor.

In confused seasons
Giving hope to the robins
The lilies push through
I wrote this haiku after spotting my day lilies covered with snow. These lilies are my signal that spring has arrived. But this image sent a mixed message. "Is winter ever going to end?" I sulked. But then a plump, beautiful robin landed on the fence. As I looked at the hardly lilies and the well-fed robin, I had my answer. Spring had not been cancelled. It was coming.
For our clients, especially those living at our emergency shelter, life can seem like an eternal winter. They, too, desperately crave a fresh season. But it seems like it's never going to arrive. At these moments, we have to encourage clients to push past the setbacks, just like the snow-topped day lilies.
"Why doesn't she just leave him?"
Victims of domestic violence hear the not so thinly veiled accusation in that question. If only it were that easy to end the domestic violence.
Never underestimate the power of a determined group of people to make a difference! Joanne Rattan, a clinical social worker and co-founder of WCH, was disturbed by the frequency of domestic violence and that victims had no place to go. She met with victims in their homes and recruited others to help, including Lou Repka and Ann Bergo.

Ashlee Zubek: New Shelter Manager
Ashlee has been working for WCH since 2015 in a variety of roles, but she's made a huge impact in the courts as an advocate for victims of sexual assault. Ashlee holds a B.A. in criminal justice and a B.S. in psychology, with minors in sociology and anthropology, from UW-Parkside. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and was in the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. After graduating, Ashlee continued her studies by attending more than 40 online and in-person trainings, covering domestic violence, sexual assault, trauma, advocacy, elder abuse and the impact of trauma on children. Ashlee has shown great compassion and dedication to the mission of WCH. Ashlee is committed to ensuring all those who cross the path of WCH have the best possible outcome. Ashlee is focused on the well being of not only the clients, but the advocates who commit themselves daily to doing this difficult work. According to Ashlee, "We live in an ever changing society and our shelter needs to change with that society. We have to keep up with the standards that not only our grant funders are holding, but also the needs of our community. My goal would be for our agency to set a precedent which other agencies work to meet."
We are very pleased that she has taken on this role and our excited for the future of our shelter program.

WCH MARDI GRAS
Women and Children's Horizons annual Mardi Gras fundraiser took place on February 24th at Local 72 UAW Hall. This festive celebration offers guests a tasty American/Cajun buffet, live music from The Southport Sound, silent auction, king cake game, wine wall, ring toss game, and so much fun. Save the date for 2019: February 23rd.

WCH's events are so important. They provide us with unrestricted funds to cover expenses not covered by grants. If you are not a bowler or a golfer, you can still help by volunteering or donating an item or gift card to the silent auction. Perhaps you know a business that might consider being a sponsor.
Strike Out Abuse" Bowl-a-thon
The 9th annual "Strike Out Abuse" Bowl-a-thon/Cinco De Mayo Party took place on Saturday, May 5th at Guttormsen Rec. Center. Twenty one teams participated raising a significant amount for Women and Children's Horizons. Shout out to Festival Foods for being our Silver Sponsor and Screwheads Decking for being a Bronze Sponsor. Lane Sponsors were "Izzy Does It" Flooring, VP Auto Detailing, and Marissa Zicarelli/Stylist at The Cutting Edge Salon. Please visit WCH's Facebook page for all sponsor and event information.
Congratulations to Niagara Bottling for taking home the traveling trophy for most money raised.

"Slice Out Abuse" Golf outing
"Calling all golfers"...Kenosha Country Club on Thursday, July 19th will be the place to be to participate in this annual outing. Event information is in the works and will be posted on WCH's website and Facebook page as soon as all the details are worked out. We hope you will consider joining us!

Nifty Thrifty Updates
|
We are approaching summer quickly and the kiddos will be out of school, very soon they will be outside more and more, and with jumping and playing we know they go thru clothes so quickly. So at Nifty Thrifty we have the summer clothes you need. With most of our Kids clothes being a set price of $1.99 you won't have to feel bad about a rip or a tear and will find peace of mind knowing we have full shelves with wonderful brands for you to replenish their closets. We will make your shopping experience even more convenient with our extended summer hours. Starting in June thru September our hours will be Tuesday 10:00 am till 7:00 pm, Wednesday thru Saturday 10:00 am till 5:30 pm. With the unveiling of our summer hours we are happy to be more accessible to all of the community. We want to end our final note on a high note by informing everyone we can that here at Nifty Thrifty we are moving towards having the best discounts which entails having some days with set discounts. Moving forward every Wednesday will be senior discount day and every Friday Veterans discount day where customers over 55 or who have served our country will receive 15% off of their total purchase which includes off our daily sales. Kathy Hilty
Our beloved volunteer, Kathy Hilty, passed away on May 1st. We will miss Kathy's smiling face. She was an amazing volunteer at WCH and often helped at our front desk and hospital on- call coverage. She was the
recipient
of WHC's Volunteer of the Year award twice; in 2012 and again in 2017. May you rest in peace.

Shelter Program Needs
In addition to our shelter's ongoing needs, we have an immediate need for face towels,body wash, liquid laundry detergent, and size 4 & 5 diapers. Also, if you have a double-wide stroller you no longer use, we would love to have it for a mother of two at shelter!
Donations for shelter can be received at our administrative office, located at 2525 63rd St. Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.
