Fishing in the Southern Vermont Deerfield Valley

The Southern Vermont Deerfield Valley is home to many rivers, lakes, and ponds where you will find some of the best fishing the state has to offer. Whether you're fly fishing along the Deerfield River throughout Dover and Wilmington, or exploring Harriman Reservoir, you're sure to get into some great spots for Vermont fishing.

Vermont Fishing Licenses are available online and can be purchased for the season or just for the days you plan on fishing. June 9-10 2018 is Free Fishing Day in Vermont where residents and non-residents may fish without a license.

The cold, clear water found throughout the state of Vermont offers excellent fishing conditions for big trout and small mouth bass, monster salmon, tasty walleyes and perch, plus magnificent settings for fishing in all kinds of waters including lakes, ponds, streams and rivers. Here, you can fish for large mouth bass, small mouth bass, channel catfish, black crappie, white crappie, walleye, rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout, lake trout, bluegill, pumpkinseed sunfish, rock bass, white perch, yellow perch, Atlantic salmon, coho salmon, bowfin, chain pickerel, longnose gar, muskie, northern pike and tiger muskie in local lakes, rivers, ponds and/or streams.

The Deerfield River is perhaps the best cold water fishery in the state, offering excellent trout fishing all year round due to cold water releases from the bottom of dams along the river.  The river features some amazing spots for fly fishing as well as some nice hidden shoreline spots as well.

Harriman Reservoir is a 2,150-acre lake located in Wilmington and Whithingham Vermont. Here you can fish for Bass, Perch, Pickerel, Trout, and Pike. You can fish from many spots along the shore, but the lake also offers multiple locations to drop in
your boat or kayak.

Lake Raponda offers a variety of fish including perch, rainbow trout, pickerel, smallmouth bass, bullhead and panfish here. Whether you're baitcasting, spinning or fly fishing your chances of getting a bite here are good. So grab your favorite fly fishing rod and reel, and head out to Lake Raponda.

And don't forget to check out Somerset Reservoir, a 1,600-acre lake, in Somerset, VT. It's a little tougher to get to, but it's definitely worth the trip for some great Vermont fishing.

So no matter your favorite secret spot, be sure to come check out all of the amazing fishing opportunities that the Deerfield Valley has to offer. For more information on fishing licenses and rules & regulations for fishing each of these places, visit the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Website. You can also visit their page about when the different bodies of water will be stocked for fish here.

The Back Story
When long-time second-homeowner and Dan Patrick Show producer Paul Pabst had some Sports Jeopardy prize money to donate to a non-profit, the idea of the "Make it on Main Street" business plan competition was born. Says Pabst, "I knew this would be a cool idea, to invest into the Wilmington/Deerfield Valley area. I've been coming up here for two decades and this will give people all over the country a chance to know what a great area this is and one person the boost to start a life and business here."
