Royal Dutch Shell Management Presents Its "World-Class Investment Case"
Fool.com, March 19, 2018:  It's hard for a $250-billion-plus business to change its stripes, but  Royal Dutch Shell's (NYSE:RDS-A)   (NYSE:RDS-B)  has done a rather incredible job over the past few years transforming the company into one of the most compelling investments in the integrated oil and gas industry.
Now that Shell has weathered the storm of low oil prices and is back to generating returns, management has plans both within and without the oil industry to preserve what it calls a "world-class investment case." Here are several quotes from the company's most recent earnings conference call that highlight some of the efforts Shell is taking to both grow the business and make the stock a better investment.
Diversifying the business away from oil
One thing that is becoming a larger fixture of every investor conference call for Shell and other big oil companies is touting one's alternative energy strategy. Shell is around the middle of the pack when it comes to shifting away from oil and gas, but CEO Ben van Beurden was quick to point out some of the investments the company made recently as well as the framework for its alternative investment strategy.  Read more...

Baker Hughes GE hunts for small oil, gas projects in Asia

Nastaq.com, March 21, 2018:  KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 (Reuters) - Oilfield services provider Baker Hughes GE ( BHGE  ) is on the hunt for smaller oil and gas projects in Asia Pacific to replicate a project in Papua New Guinea where it is providing services and financing, a senior company executive said.  The company, formed from the merger of GE's oil and gas services and equipment business and Baker Hughes, is seeing signs of renewed interest in oil and gas projects in the region, driven by smaller firms, Asia-Pacific President Visal Leng said on the sidelines of the OTC Asia conference.  The move to tackle such projects comes in the wake of the 2014 oil price crash, which devastated the region's oilfield services sector after producers sharply cut back spending on oil and gas exploration.
"We're cautiously optimistic on the (Asia-Pacific) region because projects are slowly coming back. We also see some smaller projects in size, not by NOCs (national oil companies) or IOCs (international oil companies), but by smaller operators," Leng said.  BHGE is currently working with private Australian company Twinza Oil which is developing the first offshore field for Papua New Guinea, providing fullstream services from assessing reserves to drilling and building the gas processing plant.  Read more...

Russia's Lukoil beats forecasts as fourth-quarter net profit more than doubles

Reuter.com, March 21, 2018: MOSCOW (Reuters) - Fourth-quarter net income for Russia's No.2 oil producer Lukoil rose to 120.5 billion rubles ($2.1 billion) from 47 billion rubles a year earlier thanks to higher oil prices and sales, Lukoil said on Wednesday.Analysts polled by Reuters had expected Lukoil's October - December net income to be 111 billion rubles.
Its shares were up 0.4 percent at 1055 GMT, underperforming the broader Moscow market, which climbed by 0.9 percent
Lukoil, controlled by its president Vagit Alekperov and his deputy Leonid Fedun, has been suffering from declining rates of oil production mainly due to depleted oilfields in West Siberia.
It said its hydrocarbon output fell 0.3 percent last year due to a global deal in which Russia agreed with OPEC to curb output, as well as lower volumes of "compensation crude oil" from the West Qurna-2 project in Iraq.  Read more...

UPDATE 3-Shell bets on petrol stations as electric revolution looms

* Shell to build 10,000 new petrol stations by 2025
* China, India and Mexico growth targets
* Retail to drive growth in downstream, Shell says

CNBC.com, March 21, 2018: LONDON, March 21 (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell is placing a big bet on petrol stations and convenience stores in China, India and Mexico as it looks to shore up profits during the electric car revolution.
By 2025, the oil and gas giant plans to grow its global network of roadside stations by nearly a quarter to 55,000, targeting 40 million daily customers, Shell said in a statement on Wednesday.
It will add another 5,000 convenience stores selling coffee and snacks, with growth focused on rapidly growing economies in emerging markets.
Shell, as well as rivals such as BP, sees retail as a way to secure demand for the fuels it refines, as consumption could peak as early as by the end of the next decade due to the growth in electric vehicles. Already in 2017, marketing accounted for around a quarter of Shell's earnings.   Read more...

Russia considers gas field options for Chinese pipeline

UPI.com, March 21, 2018: About 850 miles of the so-called Power of Siberia pipeline to China has been completed by Russian energy company Gazprom.
March 21 (UPI) -- Natural gas from basins in southeastern Siberia could start moving through a natural gas pipeline to China within the next five years, Gazprom said.
Representatives from Russian natural gas company Gazprom discussed the development of the Kovyktinskoye field with officials from the Irkutsk region in southeastern Siberia. Gazprom said the field is unique given its larger volume of estimated gas reserves and efforts are underway for broader development.  "Efforts are being made to design the site structures and facilities for production purposes, along with gas transmission capacities," the Russian gas company said in a statement . "It is planned to start feeding gas from Kovyktinskoye into the Power of Siberia gas pipeline in late 2022, with a section of the pipeline to be laid in the Irkutsk region."  Gazprom has a 30-year sales agreement with China National Petroleum Corp. that calls for 1.3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas per year through the pipeline. The Kremlin described the 2,500-mile Power of Siberia as a way to tie the Russian energy sector to two poles of the economic world.  Read more...
Russia aims to increase export of light oil products to Europe

Hellenicshippingnews.com, March 23, 2018: Russia plans to sharply increase fuel exports and carve out a larger share of the European market following an extensive modernisation of local refineries, says Reuters citing companies' plans and analysts' reports. The modernisation of the country's biggest refineries started in 2011 after a fuel shortage crisis. Russia also changed its tax system to encourage production of cleaner and higher-quality fuel. As a result, Russian primary oil refining volumes are expected to rise by 8 million tonnes this year and repeat a record high of 289 million tonnes reached in 2014, forecasts Vygon Consulting energy advisor. Russia's export of light oil products will increase to 106 million tonnes in 2018 from around 95 million tonnes the previous year amid a decline in domestic consumption.  According to analyst at ESAI Energy consultancy Andrew Reed, widespread hydrotreating investment made Russian diesel fuel a clean product, which is suitable for Europe. While around half of all vehicles in Europe are fueled by diesel, European refineries are unable to meet domestic demand, so the region imports around 850,000 bpd of diesel. "Exporting more clean diesel will enable Russia to continue expanding market share in Europe - to the detriment of competing exporters in the United States and the Middle East," Reed considers.  Read more...
