June Board of Directors Meeting
At their June meeting, the H-GAC Board of Directors unanimously approved the 2016 Comprehensive Financial Report and the Employee Retirement Plan.

In addition, the Board unanimously approved all other items placed on the agenda including the resolutions for three retiring Board members.  Honored for their service to  the Board and the region were City of Manvel Mayor Delores Martin, City of Pasadena Council Member Darrell Morrison and City of Rosenberg Mayor Cynthia McConathy.
GIS Training Offered
The H-GAC Data Services GIS Program has once again partnered with TeachMeGIS to host a series of high quality, instructor led GIS trainings in the 2nd Floor Training Room at H-GAC. TeachMeGIS staff will be onsite to conduct seven different courses throughout 2017. The course dates, course topics, and pricing, which includes a 15% discount for H-GAC employees and H-GAC members, are all listed on the GIS Training page on the H-GAC website.

Detailed information on the course content for all seven trainings is available by clicking on the course name. If interested in attending one of these courses, just select the red "Register Now" button to register for a class on the TeachMeGIS website. When registering, please be sure to select "H-GAC" under the location column of the desired class to receive the discount. 2017 Newly Elected Officials Workshop

T he Houston-Galveston Area Council invites all newly elected or current city, county and ISD officials who would like to refresh their knowledge to participate in its annual workshop on Wednesday , July 12, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 
 
An outstanding group of experts will present information and discuss issues faced by all elected officials covering the following topics:
  • Legal Issues - Texas Open Meeting Act
  • Financial Management and Budgeting
  • Teamwork Between Elected Officials and Staff
  • Effective Communications - Media Relations
Please reserve your seat by July 7, 2017. The cost is $45.00 and includes breakfast, lunch, and workshop materials.

2017 Regional Salary and Benefits Survey Report Now Available
H-GAC has concluded its 2017 Regional Salary and Benefits Survey and its annual report is now available. This report includes a summary of all positions, the lowest and highest salaries reported, simple averages, number of cities and employees for each position surveyed for all the participating cities.

The survey covered seventy-four (74) job titles in seven (7) major job categories (executive, management/professional, administrative/clerical, emergency services, police, fire, and technical/ craft). Each responding city was asked to provide information about the number of employees, FLSA overtime status (exempt or non-exempt), employee salaries, salary range (minimum and maximum, if applicable), supervisor's title(s) and employee title(s) for each job.   All salaries are presented in annual amounts, based on 2,080 hours per year.

Participants who completed the 2017 H-GAC Regional Salary and Benefits survey will receive a complimentary copy of the 2017 Report in both electronic and physical formats.

How's The Water?  2017 Basin Highlights Report Available Online

Each year the  H-GAC Clean Rivers Program  publishes  a report  for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality summarizing the state of water quality in the region.
 
The  2017 Basin Highlights Report  includes water quality status and trends for waterways in four basins monitored by the H-GAC program, an overview of the program's outreach activities, and a summary of special projects using Clean Rivers Program data.
 
This year's report is accessible in an  online  story map format with interactive maps, photos, graphics, and text. The application is compatible with desktops, tablets, and smartphones.
H-GAC Earns Awards
Houston Regional GIS Expo Honors

Thushara Ranatunga, H-GAC Senior Environmental Modeler, earned recognition at the 2017 Houston Regional GIS Expo for a presentation on developing a new regional land use-land cover dataset.

The project won second place in the Content/Analytical Presentation category during the event in March. The new dataset includes different developed and non-developed land categories in a 15-county region. It was produced based on Landsat satellite data and aerial imageries using GIS and remote sensing technologies.



Disaster Debris Program Earns KTB Recognition  
                                                            

The H-GAC disaster debris program recently received recognition as a winner of the 2017 Keep Texas Beautiful Awards, Government-Regional Category. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to the Texas environment made by government departments, divisions or agencies. 

H-GAC's efforts through the program include well-attended workshops and trainings; educational resources, such as disaster debris management videos and a poster; and technical assistance across the state.
