THE URBAN DICTIONARY DESCRIBES SENIORITIS AS A CRIPPLING DISEASE THAT STRIKES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. "Symptoms include: laziness, an over-excessive wearing of sweat pants, repeated absences, and a generally dismissive attitude. The only known cure is a phenomenon called graduation."
That phenomenon may exist somewhere, but at the Foundation, the reverse is true. It's scholarship time.

Local students are running at full throttle to get their applications in (no later than midnight on April 1!) to secure funding for college or certificate programs. The Foundation administers about 70 scholarships, many with multiple awards. Last year, 138 students received $420,000 in scholarships. Our supporting organization, The Cape Cod Association, awarded an additional $437,500 to 286 students.
This month's scholarship frenzy and upcoming fundraisers that benefit local students also inspired our feature story, Logan's Legacy, about one of our memorial scholarships.
While we're doing so much for so many, the need is still high. Only about half
of the students who apply receive scholarships. Naturally, most scholarships only fund a portion of their expenses.
There are also eligibility gaps that need to be filled--especially creating opportunities for adults who are part of our community and workforce.

LOGAN DUNNE GREW UP IN TRURO. He had an infectious smile, insatiable curiosity and wicked sense of humor. He surfed in the summer, snowboarded in the winter and played on his school's soccer, baseball, and basketball teams just about every day in between. He couldn't resist a game of Blokus or walk away from an unsolved Rubik's cube. He loved math, science, and psychology and wanted to study engineering in college.
In 2007, Logan was diagnosed with Stage IV neuroblastoma, a rare pediatric cancer. The aggressive treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston forced him to sit out much of his freshman and sophomore high school years, but when he returned to school as part of the class of 2012, he quickly made up for lost time. Over the next two years, Logan was elected class secretary, an officer of the National Honor Society and Senior Prom King. He represented Truro at the Massachusetts Boys State leadership program and founded the Midnight Marauders, a top Outer Cape fundraiser for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life Event.
He once wrote: "I wake up, work harder, laugh deeper, and dream bigger than the day before. That is what success is."
Logan's cancer returned in the fall of his senior year. In anticipation of losing his hair again from the pending chemo, he decided to sport a colorful mohawk. His beloved classmates dyed their own hair to match his. After a valiant 5-year journey with cancer, Logan passed away in January 2013 at the age of 20.

Logan has not been forgotten. His family created The Logan Dunne Memorial Scholarship, a fund of The Cape Cod Foundation in his honor. Each year, it awards seniors graduating from Nauset Regional High School up to $2,000 each to continue their education. Since 2013, 15 students have received over $18,000 in scholarships. Some, like Logan, have been faced with a serious challenge and turned a hardship into something positive. Others have shared his passion for math, science, psychology or engineering. All have benefited from his legacy of courage, kindness and camaraderie.

This coffee fundraiser has several perks: free food and drink in exchange for donations of any size, plus, you can bid on silent auction items generously donated by area businesses. Proceeds benefit the Logan Dunne Memorial Scholarship Fund of The Cape Cod Foundation which provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors from Nauset Regional High School. PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
View and purchase work by over 70 budding, student photographers from across the Cape. The show is open to the public until April 29. Free-will donations benefit the Cape Liberty Fund of The Cape Cod Foundation which provides scholarships to Cape Cod Technical High School graduates to offset the fees for the state licensing and placement exams needed to obtain their vocational school certifications and enter the workforce.

D-Y DOLPHIN DASH 5K ROAD RACE/WALK
Get your MOVE on at this family-oriented 5K Road Race. The $35 early registration fee ($25 for D-Y students) entitles you to a long-sleeve T-shirt and a Pre-Race Pasta Dinner at the school the night before. Proceeds benefit student athletes at D-Y High School. Each year, about 400 students must pay a $100 participation fee to compete on the school's athletic teams. Last year's run covered the full cost for participating students. Any additional funds raised will help offset other departmental needs, such as equipment or transportation costs.
