A Message From The Superintendent's Office...
Dear Falcon Community,
This is the snowiest spring in recent memory. Hopefully, those spring flowers will begin blooming and we can start complaining about how hot it is. As of now, school will be in session for students and staff on Friday, April 6, 2018 as a makeup day for a school closing due to inclement weather. Two additional days need to be scheduled as makeup days, which the Board should approve at their Board meeting on Tuesday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m. Once the two additional days are approved, we will send out a Falcon Express with the makeup days. We appreciate your patience, as we know that makeup days can impact your family calendar.
I appreciate the efforts of everyone who was involved in the referendum process for an additional middle school to house our expanding student population. Since the referendum was defeated by 143 votes, the Board and District Administration will review our plans taking into account the feedback we received from parents and the community. Unfortunately, any action to address our student overcrowding is delayed. Information regarding the next steps will be released to the public as soon as it becomes available; thus, maintaining our goal to provide transparency in presenting a referendum to the community.
The lobbying efforts of the Board, District Administration, staff and community in securing additional State Aid has been realized in additional State Aid for the Monroe Township School District. The District received an additional $344,629 in additional State Aid for the 2018-19 school year. We will continue to lobby for additional State Aid, as this is only a portion of the amount of State Aid we should be receiving.

OAK TREE OLYMPICS
"Let the games begin!" proclaimed Principal Patty Dinsmore, as she announced the start of Oak Tree
School's first Olympic Games. On Friday, February 2nd, the students at Oak Tree made a direct
connection to the real Olympic Games that were held in South Korea this month.
The day began with an Opening Ceremony that included the Pledge of Allegiance and a torch relay
between teachers through the halls, as the Olympic theme music played over the school intercom. A
Parade of Nations followed, as students walked around the building, viewing bulletin boards representing
various countries.
Students of all grade levels participated in Olympic style events throughout the day. These included
Speed Skating, Curling, Gymnastics, Noodle Javelin, Hallway Bobsled, and many more! Students from
Monroe Township High School assisted the teachers and students with these activities. Dr. Kozak and
the Monroe Falcon even made an appearance!
During the Closing Ceremony, the students lined the hallways to receive Olympic medals, and then
returned to their classrooms to reflect on the day's experience. Follow up activities consisted of
creating unique medals, researching country facts, and learning about the history of the Olympic Games.
We hope that our students not only enjoyed this thrilling day, but also recognized the Olympics as an
event that emphasizes a spirit of peace among athletes around the world.

MTHS FBLA ADVANCES AT THE SLC TO THE NLC
Congratulations to all of our FBLA (SLC) State Competition Competitors! Working with unfortunate snow conditions and school closings that hindered the arrival to the SLC for the first two days of the conference, FBLA members did not give up! They worked during the snow days, recording and submitting video presentations, and were able to attend the awards ceremony on Friday, March 9th in Atlantic City, NJ. MTHS FBLA was called to the stage to collect more awards, in more events, in chapter history! We are beyond proud of their achievements, dedication, leadership and success! MAKERSPACE NIGHT AT OAK TREE
Problem solving, thinking, collaborating, inventing, experimenting, designing
.....
these are just some of the ways Oak Tree students explore the Makerspace located in our Media Center. On March 1
st
grade 2 and grade 3 students were able to show their parents exactly how it's done at our first Makerspace Night. For one hour, parents rotated to four different stations to get a glimpse of what their children experience when they visit during the school day. The stations included Osmos, Coding, Robots, and the actual Makerspace area which also houses our 3-D printer. Hosted by members of the Oak Tree Makerspace Committee, each rotation invited parents to play, construct, tinker and interact. The Monroe Township Library was also on hand with their 3-D printer to share some of the programs that they offer.

GROUP SUMMER SCHOLARS RESEARCH PROGRAM
An excellent opportunity is being offered to high school students interested in STEM fields this summer at Kean University - the
Group Summer Scholars Research Program.
The Group Summer Scholars Research Program (GSSRP) is a 6-week, hands-on research experience aimed at attracting and developing talented students who are interested in pursuing an education in a STEM field. Upon entering the program students are divided into small research teams that are paired with a faculty mentor conducting authentic scientific research in Analytical Chemistry, Virtual Reality & Scientific Visualization, Microbiomes & Bioinformatics, Cancer Biology, Computational Mathematics and Modern Drug Discovery. Students learn how to conduct basic and applied research during this program and develop a true appreciation of the scientific research process while contributing first hand to the acquisition of new scientific knowledge.
The 2018 GSSRP runs from July 9 - August 16 and applications are now being accepted. The application deadline is
March 30th

The 2018 Middlesex County American Legion Voice of Democracy
High School
oratorical contest finals were held on Saturday, January 27
th
with each contestant delivering an 8-10 minute prepared oration about a phase of the Constitution of the United States, as well as an impromptu oration on a
randomly assigned constitutional topic.
Congratulations to Ms Ria Patel, Monroe Township High School junior. Ria has advanced through the sequence of contest competitions winning the at the HS, county and regional levels. Advisor: Chris Thumm
The purpose of The American Legion High School Oratorical Voice of Democracy Contest is to support and develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of all high school students. Objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, thinking and speaking clearly, and preparation for accepting the duties and responsibilities of American citizenship. Students begin competition at the Legion Post level in their local high schools. Winners progress to County, Regional and State competitions.
Sponsored by American Legion Post 522, Ria will compete as in a
State finalist on March 31st.

Cat in the Hat Visits Oak Tree
"And then something went BUMP! How that bump made us jump!"

Oak Tree Kindergarten and first grade students were sitting quietly in the gym listening to their principal read those words aloud from the story the
Cat in the Hat
as part of our
Read Across America Celebration.
At the word
BUMP,
the gym erupted into screams of excitement and surprise as the actual Cat in the Hat appeared. Courtesy of the NJEA, the Cat in the Hat's appearance was the result of a winning ticket being drawn at the NJEA Convention. Third grade teacher Ms. Synarski was the recipient and Oak Tree students were the lucky winners as well.
As Mrs. Dinsmore continued to read the story aloud, the Cat in the Hat acted out the story with the help of Things 1 and 2, also known as Mrs. Kappus our Reading Specialist and Mrs. Fretz our Language Arts Basic Skills teacher. Following the story, the special guest took numerous photos with the classes and gave high fives to all of the third and second grade students as well. It was a day that will long be remembered.

WOODLAND SCHOOL HAPPENINGS!
- Woodland School is proud to announce their 17th year participation in Jump Rope For Heart on February 14th. To date, we have raised $274,700 for the American Heart Association.
- Recent years have shown an increase in the level of anxiety and stress that children experience. Mindfulness and yoga help support the whole child approach to helping students grow academically and socially. The 5th grade Character Crew has learned mindfulness and yoga strategies that are beneficial for all students within the classroom setting. They have begun visiting classrooms for approximately 5-10 minutes to teach these strategies to the students.
- We have had exciting school assemblies this month. As part of our all-school emphasis from the library entitled "One World One America" we had Darrah Carr Irish Dancers visit our school to perform. This collaborative effort focuses on the cultural and ethnic contributions of Americans. We have had Young Audiences provide a Writing Workshop with our students who are participating in Poetry Slam. Jenkinson's Aquarium visited Woodland with a 3 year old African penguin. Students learned many different facts about these endangered birds.

The MTMS Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Yale Snyder, performed at the New Jersey Music Educators Association Conference on Saturday, February 24th. MTMS was the only middle school percussion ensemble to be chosen to perform at this event. The performance was very well received and we congratulate our students for their excellent performance!

The Veterans Committee Clothing Drive was a huge success with MTMS collecting over 2,000 items! Additionally, staff donations from our Week of Honor allowed MTMS to provide a flat screen TV to the Menlo Park Veterans Home. A BIG "thank you" to Pauline Amabile on an outstanding job in organizing this program! Also, a special "thank you" to Christy Viszoki and the AVID students who were responsible for collecting donations along with our fantastic parents and students for their support!
The MTMS PTO Box Tops Collection Contest last month concluded with Mrs. Schieda's homeroom as the winners, congratulations! That home room collected 495 box tops of the total 2850 and so far we've raised $929 for the year! Congratulations to all our students and thank you to our wonderful parents for helping make the contest such a success!

Congratulations to Anshul Chandaliya who represented Monroe in the Region II NJAJE Jazz auditions on Monday, March 12th. He competed against other 7th, 8th and 9th grade musicians from around Central New Jersey to earn the top trumpet spot in the jazz ensemble. Fantastic job Anshul!
High School Guidance Counselors came to MTMS on Tuesday, March 13th, and Wednesday, March 14th, to assist 8th grade students in creating their schedule for next year. We thank them for their time!
Mrs. Williams' 7th and 8th grade art students have participated in this year's "Doodle 4 Google" competition, sponsored by Google. The students have worked hard to illustrate this year's theme of "What inspires you?" Select student works have been submitted to Google. Five finalists will be selected in this nation-wide competition and one winner. Best of luck to all of our fabulous MTMS artists!
MTMS congratulates our 6th graders on their graduation from the L.E.A.D. Program recently! Law Enforcement Against Drugs creates safer, healthier communities, free of drugs, bullying and violence, all while promoting and supporting Law Enforcement Services. L.E.A.D. replaced the D.A.R.E. program a couple of years ago and has been an integral experience for our 6th grade students to participate in. They learn about peer pressures of drug, alcohol and tobacco use and how to deal with those pressures. They learn about bullying, what to do when it happens and how to react. We thank our wonderful MTPD program presenters, Detectives Breuer and Silvestri, for all their hard work and time here at MTMS!
MTMS invites everyone to come out and support our students and sing along to your favorite 80's hits as we present "Back to the 80's". Tickets are $10 each. The performances are March 22, 23, and 24 at 7:00pm.

BROOKSIDE CULTURAL FAIR 2018

On February 9th, Barclay Brook & Brookside PTA hosted The Brookside Cultural Fair. Countries from around the World are displayed and presented to the students in this annual PTA sponsored event. Like every year, the school gym is magically transformed into a globe trotters wonderland. There was a colorful and lively exhibition of artifacts, culture, attire and even music from various parts of the world. Every classroom visited the fair for one period and spent 5-6 minutes visiting each country on display. The presenters shared with the students various geographical facts, historical events and interesting cultural traditions in each country. In 40 minutes, these students got a very visual, up close experience of several countries they probably had never been to before. Students were encouraged to wear the colors or the traditional attire of their own country to school this day and share their culture and heritage with their friends.
The success of this event is very dependent on parents and teachers who volunteer their time to set up a display for a country they have their roots from or even a country that they have interest in or have travelled. This year 14 countries were represented. Brookside teachers represented six of these: Mrs. Dudzinski presented Czech Republic and also exhibited Poland from the artifacts which were donated by our school Custodian, Wacia Gierlachowska; Senora Arons presented Spain; Ms. Canzano presented Italy; Mrs. Collins presented England; and Mrs. Lin, our media specialist, helped with China for part of the day. Parents who helped with this event were Julia Leung - Germany, Kathryn Crowley - China, Paula Romanczuk - South Africa, Elizabeth Falkowski - Ireland, Debbie Kucharczyk - France, Rashmi Shaligram, Rashmi Lalla, Purvi Shah & Vaishali Mehta - India, Sudipta Saxena, Laura Steinberg and Mittal Sha - Israel, Emaan Siddiqui and Rubina Pompee- Pakistan and ToniAnn Dibenedetto - Australia.
The cultural fair culminated with the classes participating in a Trivia contest based on the countries they had visited and the presentations. The grade level winners, Zeeshaan Bohra in Grade 3, Roman Schiavone in Grade 4, and Mahanth Komuravelli in Grade 5 were awarded Travel Books sponsored by the BBBS PTA.
Some fun facts that the students found very interesting were: the discovery that French fries aren't really French; #selfie started in Australia; China is the world's most populated country; Western wall in Israel has little cracks through which you can put notes with prayers to God; India has over 1600 different languages; or that the first women prime minister was that of a Muslim country Pakistan. The students were amazed at some of these facts; not to mention the bonus of trying yoga pose while visiting India, learning to yodel in Germany and trying their hands at Chinese calligraphy. The cultural Fair is a fun yet educational event that the PTA takes pride in hosting each year for the Brookside school students.
Brookside's Fourth Grade Olympic Math Around the World

These were the excited voices heard from the 4th grade classrooms at Brookside School on February 9, 2018 as the students competed in Olympic Around the World. In honor of the Olympics beginning and our school's Cultural Fair, 4th grade teachers at Brookside decided to integrate the events into our math curriculum. Students dressed in their favorite country's flag colors or ethnic attire and enjoyed playing the fast-paced math activity. Around the World is a math game teachers have been playing in their classrooms for a long time where one student challenges another student in a basic math fact. The student who says the answer first continues in a circle challenging students until they have completed the circle or have gone around the world. "Our idea was to encourage the students to practice their math facts at home," said Mrs. Brown. "Once we mentioned the activity to them, they wanted to practice at school each afternoon while busses were being called." The gold medalist was Ved Vyas, the silver medalist was Armeet Minhas and the bronze medal went to Arnav Mani. The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to the next time. One student said it best, "This rocked!"
3...2...1...Go for launch!
Students in Mrs. Dudzinski's 3rd grade class have been having a BLAST learning about rocket science. In honor of the recent Falcon Heavy rocket launch by SpaceX, students have been connecting their current science unit with rockets. Through a multi-day STEM activity, students were able to relate their science vocabulary in an authentic way by designing and testing straw rockets. Hearing the students using words such as: force, gravity, motion, thrust, lift, drag, variables, and aerodynamics was music to the ears! Students collected data and thought about modifications as they watched their rockets soar through the air. Watch out, NASA, there are some inspired aerospace engineers coming your way!
Brookside's Third Grade 100th Day S.T.E.A.M. Rotation Challenge
The third graders at Brookside are 100 days smarter! This February, the third graders celebrated the 100th day of school by participating in a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) challenge rotation. In each classroom, students were presented with a different S.T.E.A.M. challenge to complete; what can you create with 100 legos? What can you make with 100 straws? What can you build with 100 cups? The students rotated around to each classroom to complete the challenges. It was amazing to see the innovative and unique creations that each group was able to come up with!
BROOKSIDE'S PI DAY
Mrs. Levinson's 4th graders celebrate PI Day
March 14th is a fun time to celebrate the number pi because it is 3.14! Students learned about the history of the number and its applications through fun exploratory centers. They worked on math problems, tried to solve an extremely difficult pi-based Sudoku, played games, graphed the digits, did experiments to find out how pi works, and got creative applying pi to art and even literature! Caprice Simon was able to most accurately calculate pi by measuring the diameter and circumference of a circle and dividing. In a contest to see who could memorize the most digits, Arnav Mani won by reciting pi out to 45 digits! How many do you know?
Mr. Silverman and Ms. Rubenstein's class on PI Day
On 3/14, Mr. Silverman and Ms. Rubenstein's science class celebrated Pi day. They utilized the Brookside Makerspace Lab by having students create the Pi symbol from lego pieces. The children also used ipads and the green screen to take photos with different backgrounds. The photo of the teachers was taken by a student to thank them for the wonderful experience.
Brookside School "Souper Bowl" Fundraiser
Once again, Brookside School participated in our annual "Souper" Bowl Fundraiser. This event works to raise awareness about hunger, but more so, to replenish our food pantries after the busy season of supporting needy families between Thanksgiving and the Winter Holidays. As a part of this annual event to foster awareness about this real world issue, children engaged in lessons that were anchored in valued character traits such as empathy, generosity, and compassion. Thanks to our students, staff, and parents we were able to support many local food pantries in the community. In total, we were able to raise over 521 non-perishable food items! Thanks again to all who contributed to our "Souper" Bowl Fundraiser!
