Special Music for Palm Sunday
A SPECIAL FEATURE to close the Palm Sunday service will include the retiring Solemn Procession accompanied by The Saint Luke’s Choir singing “Plorate, filii Israel” (Weep, children of Israel) the legendary choral Lament by Giacomo Carissimi (Italian, 1605-1674). Its enthralling capacity, with repeated sobbing and moaning, heralded then and still as “thus, the most beautiful music ever to be composed.” (A. Kircher, Jesuit College of Rome, 1650)

Holy Week Schedule of Services
We invite you to view a full schedule of Holy Week services here.

Below are a few things to note:

  • Wednesday, March 28th
  • Service of Tenebrae, 6:30 pm - This service is structured around psalms, readings, and responses. The distinctive ceremonial of Tenebrae includes use of fifteen lighted candles, often set on a special, triangular stand. One candle is extinguished as each of the fourteen appointed psalms is completed. The fifteenth candle, symbolic of Christ, is left lighted at the end of the final psalm. But it is carried away to be hidden, which signifies the apparent victory of the forces of evil. A sudden loud noise is made at the end of the service, symbolizing the earthquake at Christ's death. The lighted candle is then restored to its place, suggesting Christ's eventual triumph.

  • Maundy Thursday
  • The Prayer Vigil begins immediately following the Maundy Thursday service at 6:30 pm. Sign up for a time slot in the Commons.

  • Stations of the Cross
  • Seeking the Suffering Jesus on the Streets of Birmingham, Group will assemble at Linn Park across from the Courthouse at 11:50 am.
