This year's Great American Litter Pick Up turned out the largest number of volunteers in San Jose history. The Earth Day weekend event hosted 8,383 people, who rolled up their sleeves and picked up nearly 100,000 pounds of trash from San Jose streets!
BART to Silicon Valley: Two Steps Closer to Completing the Ring of Rail Around the Bay

This month has shown promising progress on the decades-long effort to bring BART through Downtown San Jose. On April 26, the State of California committed $730 million to Phase II of the BART to Silicon Valley build-out. Shortly thereafter, the BART board joined VTA in voting to approve a plan for a single-tunnel BART design. The "single-bore" model will help mitigate impacts to businesses, restaurants, and hotels when tunneling begins under Santa Clara St.

Thanks to these developments, we're two steps closer to completing the "ring of rail" around the Bay! Learn more.

The City Council Continues Approving Street Repaving Projects

Last week, Mayor Liccardo and City Council approved a nearly $13 million contract to resurface San Jose's busiest roads. The contract, largely funded by the state's 2017 Senate Bill 1 (SB1) is one of five that will ultimately allow pavement maintenance and repair to move ahead on approximately 100  miles of San Jose streets.

The contract, which was awarded to MCK Services, Inc., will result in 23 miles of new asphalt. The City Council will consider a 69-mile sealing project next week, as well as a smaller federally funded project, completing the 2018 repaving program.

In all, money from California's 2017 Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Program, created by SB1, has added an additional $7.2 million on top of almost $43 million in City funds, vehicle registration fees, and state gas tax revenue already allocated to road repair and maintenance.

For more information, including a list of roads that will receive maintenance under this contract, see the press release.
The City Strikes a Deal with AT&T to Deploy Small Cells on City Light Poles

This month, the City Council approved an agreement with AT&T to deploy 200 small cells throughout San Jose to improve wireless coverage in our city, and provide millions of dollars to support the City's efforts to bridge the digital divide for low-income residents.

The deployment of these small cells will allow AT&T to improve current wireless voice and data coverage for San Jose residents and businesses, as well as the quality and coverage of the current FirstNet emergency responder communications network. The small cells could also help support the deployment of next generation mobile technologies in the future.

In return for granting access to install these small cells on public light poles, the City will receive approximately $5 million in lease revenue to support City digital inclusion projects that seek to help ensure that all San Jose residents have access to high-quality and affordable broadband internet service. As part of this effort, the City Council also approved creating a Digital Inclusion Fund which will help ensure these types of lease revenues are allocated to projects that improve broadband access in the communities where they're most needed.
