Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children: Strengthening our Community Response
Within 72 hours, a runaway youth is approached by an exploiter or sex trafficker. While this is a national average, the phenomenon includes Tompkins County.
This is just one of many sobering facts attendees learned on April 26th about commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) and our community's response.
Women's Fund sponsored this free gathering where p
articipants learned how to build their skills for prevention and awareness of sex trafficking among women and youth. This event's takeaways, resources and opportunities for further training included how law enforcement and local organizations are responding.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
A recent tackle to remove shame and discrimination around suicide
The S Word, a new film addressing suicide was shown at Cornell University in partnership with Cornell Minds Matter, The Sophie Fund and Community Foundation. The documentary puts a human face on this often feared and misunderstood topic, delving into the hearts and minds of suicide attempt survivors, along with their families and loved ones.
Filmmaker Lisa Klein lost both her brother and father to suicide, compelling her to create this film. "There is no more highly charged personal issue for me. I was driven to document it and open a much-needed conversation. We must boldly talk about suicide because no family should experience this," Klein says. More at The Sophie Fund

Kids Discover the Trail! Program Expands After Study Funded by Community Foundation

A record number of children in Tompkins County - 4,400 - participated in
Kids Discover the Trail! (KDT!) program, a series of field trips that bring learning to life at eight educational organizations. This year, 80% of elementary students from all six school districts in Tompkins County participated in the program.
KDT! was expanded to all six school districts last year after Community Foundation, along with several other donors, funded a feasibility study in 2011. Community Foundation contributed $10,000 toward the study, which examined how the program could be introduced into elementary schools in districts beyond Ithaca and Trumansburg. MORE
