In the wake of recent devastating fires, the Mill Valley Fire Department and Emergency Preparedness Commission urges you to act now to prepare for the upcoming fire season.

"It is hard to say how this fire season will shape up," Fire Chief Tom Welch said at a recent Get Ready Mill Valley meeting. "If it is anything like the previous ones, we could be in for a doozy."

What Can You Do to Prepare?

• Clear vegetation around your property. See below for information, and, check out our Defensible Space App or request a free residential fire assessment.
• Prepare for an evacuation: pack your Grab-and-Go bag, learn two ways to evacuate from your neighborhood (both walking and driving), get to know your neighbors and be willing to help in the event of an emergency.
• Collect and maintain 5-7 days of supplies should you have to shelter in place.
• Sign up for emergency alerts at AlertMarin and Mill Valley Nixle.

On Friday, April 20, 2018, the Redwoods community of seniors hosted the twenty sixth annual Celebration of Service. Fire Chief Tom Welch was presented with the Public Safety Award.  In this video, he shares his experience of the community comnig together during the Napa and Sonoma fires.

In case you missed it, the annual Mill Valley Community Meeting video is now available to view. This meeting was an  opportunity for residents to get their questions answered directly and share their own thoughts on the most pressing issues of the day. The conversation was driven by local residents from start to finish, including an hour of Q&A to City Council members and the heads of each City Department.

We are pleased to introduce Maritza Williams, Senior Account Clerk, in the Finance and Human Resource Department. Maritza started her employment with the City in the Recreation Department where she worked as a Lead Facilities Attendant. She started working in the Finance Department earlier this year.

In her new role, Maritza carries out important work that positively affects all of us every day, including processing all of the invoices that need to be paid by the City for goods and services, issuing purchase orders, assisting the monitoring of department budgets and providing administrative support to her department.

Maritza was born in Honduras, grew up in San Rafael, and has 6-year old twin daughters. She plans to finish her Associates Degree in Accounting from Santa Rosa Junior College in the near future and then move on to Dominican University to complete a bachelor's degree.
"I am very happy to have this opportunity and I'm excited to learn more about Mill Valley!" Maritza said.

The historic SLP #61 got a much-needed facelift recently. The upper section of the path had deteriorated and lacked handrails. Contractors placed new concrete steps, handrails, and a sphalt berms were placed for erosion control.

On Sunday, April 29th the Mill Valley Community Center hosted Volunteer Celebration Day. There were dozens of local nonprofits in attendance, such as Streamkeepers and Mill Valley Clean, providing countless opportunities for community involvement. Cheap Therapy, a local band, entertained the guests and a local brewery, Fort Point provided complimentary beer tastings. Thanks to Boneyard BBQ for the delicious lunch! It was a very fun day.

Public Art Program Artist Statement of Qualifications Request

The City of Mill Valley's Arts Commission is currently soliciting local artists interested in participating in the City's new Public Art Program. If you are a professional artist, who specializes in the creation of public artwork, and would like to be considered for a future public art project, please consider submitting an Artist Statement of Qualifications, via this online application. 7th Annual Poetry World Series

Hard to describe, but definitely not to be missed, the Poetry World Series will surprise you. Two teams of poets come up to bat as they are challenged to make their poems fit to "pitched" subjects from the audience. It's a wacky premise, but it allows the poets to showcase their wit and smarts as they read their poems and make their case.

Sunday, May 27th 

With your guide, visit Jagtown, an area of rough and tumble saloons, and its neighbor, the 1906 subdivision of Tamalpais Park, to see two neighborhoods that transformed Mill Valley into the family friendly town we love. Bar fights, tree-lined lanes, Scouts, schools and medicine play large roles in the personality of this historical walk. 

The walk begins at the Mill Valley Lumber Yard. Tours leave every half hour starting at 9:30am with the last tour leaving at 3:00pm. Advance tickets are available online or at the door on the day of the event. No dogs.
