Ralph C. Richardson has announced plans to retire as the dean and CEO of Kansas State University's Olathe campus before July 1. He has served in the position since August 2015.
Under Richardson's leadership, Kansas State University leveraged the Olathe campus to elevate the its profile in academics, research and service in the Greater Kansas City region and generate new opportunities for students and faculty.

Strengthening partnerships with contract research organizations, or CROs, is the focus of an upcoming professional development seminar for the animal health industry. The seminar is part of the ongoing regulatory affairs in animal health series.

A $149,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture helps develop a self-sustaining program that better prepares high school teachers to deliver outstanding teaching in animal health biotechnology.

This conference looks at how a clearinghouse platform for human and animal health data can transform research and expedite breakthroughs for human, animal and environmental health.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture, K-State Research and Extension and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment will host six regional workshops in February 2019 to assist farmers' market vendors and managers. The Olathe campus will host the Feb. 1 event.

Around the campus
Eleni Pliakoni, Ph.D, associate professor of urban food production and post-harvest handling, and Cary Rivard, Ph.D., associate professor of horticulture and natural resources, extension specialist and director of the K-State Research and Extension Center - Olathe, addressed dozens of smallholder farmers from Tanzania at the first grower training meeting. The meeting, which was held in Miami, Florida, is part of a U.S. Agency for International Development project to help reduce postharvest losses for smallholder farmers in Tanzania. Judy Favor, Ph.D., provided a lively presentation on "Successfully navigating emotionally charged Interactions" at the recent Greater KC Hospitality and Lodging Association Educational Forum, which was hosted at the Doubletree in Overland Park.

Four graduate students who are working on master's and doctorates at the Olathe campus discussed their research in the season extension track with attendees at the recent Great Plains Growers Conference. Their projects are looking at spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, cover crops and sweet potato slips.

Earlier this month, the KC STEM Alliance hosted Computer Science Teacher Mentor Day at the Olathe campus. Teachers learned about topics ranging from cybersecurity to smart cities and then to science standards and beyond -- all focused on developing the region's next generation of talent.
