February Dinner
Special Guest Speaker

Nick Nickelson
Author, Co-founder Non-Profit
Former Naval Frogman

Wednesday, February 6, 2019
No Host Bar starts at 6:00 p.m.
Dinner starts at 7.p.m.

Nick Nickelson served in Underwater Demolition Team Twelve, a precursor to today's Navy SEAL's, from 1962 until 1965. He served in Vietnam, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and was a member of the three-man team that rescued Astronaut Gordon Cooper after his Faith 7 Mercury landing. The U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. has a bronze relief of the rescue mission showing Nick on the capsule. He has an undergraduate degree in Business Management from Pepperdine University and is an author of three published books "HOOYAH! UDT/SEAL Stories of the 1960s" (First and Second Edition and Kindle). He is an author of children's stories and recently published a new Kindle Edition book entitled, "A Commitment to Caring: Caring for Homeless Veterans," the history of a homeless veteran nonprofit organization he co-founded and Chaired from 1991 to 2015.

After a career in aerospace, Nick co-founded a non-profit organization, "The Kenny Nickelson Memorial Foundation for Homeless Veterans" (KNMF) along with his wife Doris www.knmf.org. During their 23 years of service, KNMF served more than 111,000 Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo counties homeless and formerly homeless veterans, needy children, and other homeless.

Nick was one of three Navy Frogmen who placed the flotation collar on Gordon Cooper's Mercury Capsule when it splashed down in the Pacific on May 16, 1963. This presentation is about the Original Seven Mercury Astronauts of which six were America's first men in space. They flew both sub-orbital and orbital flights starting in May 1961 and concluding in May 1963. These six Astronauts were real American heroes and there is a story related to each one, some funny and others compelling. Nick will show pictures of each flight and explain the problems each encountered.

A Cub Comes Home To Hibernate
Click on image for more information
One of the oldest flying Taylor J-2 Cub registered with the FAA, recently touched down in Paso Robles on its final airborne flight. Destined to be hung in the Hind Pavilion, the J-2 Cub is the predecessor to the ever popular Piper Cub series of aircraft. Both Taylor and Piper developed Cubs utilized as liaison aircraft by the military in the years prior to WWII.

This 525 pound aircraft has been completely restored and is in immaculate condition.
Woodland Auto Display Updates

The weather is now chilly in Oklahoma.  If you happened to be at the Chili Bowl this past month in Tulsa, you may have seen the National Midget Racing Hall of Fame Director, Dick Woodland, along with his wife Claudia, (and son Robert - not in pic), hanging with current inductee, Mario Andretti and former inductee, Bobby Unser. It was said, "A good time was had by all!"

Front - Bobby Unser, Rear: Mario Andretti, Dick and Claudia Woodland.

There was another reason to attend the Chili Bowl, which was to watch the Woodland Auto Display sponsored race cars!  We are proud to be home to the incredible Woodland Auto Display here at the Estrella Warbirds Museum.

Now that the Chili Bowl is over, expect more work to be don on finishing up the latest addition to the Auto Display.  We are looking forward to meeting you here!

Aero-3-A is coming to Estrella Warbirds Museum
Ikrus (Utav) Aero-3-A

The winter rains have not slowed things down at the museum. There is a lot going on behind the scenes! During the January meeting, the board of directors accepted a donation of an extremely rare aircraft.

The Areo-3-A is a Yugoslav military trainer. How rare is it? So rare that there are only two known to be flying in the world (both in Serbia), and only two registered on the FAA roles, one of which is dismantled, in storage in Florida. We will shortly become home to the one pictured above!

Although manufactured in Yugoslavia, it has a Lycoming engine. A very rare feature of this all wood framed aircraft, is that the fluid which was sprayed out on the aircraft for cleaning the cockpit windows in flight,  was none other than (would you guess?)  gasoline!  For a short history lesson on this aircraft, click on the picture.
Driving to the Museum? Please Note the Following:

Visitors to Estrella Warbirds Museum in Paso Robles, please note effective January 1st, 2019, the city of Paso Robles is undertaking major road and utility renovations along Dry Creek Road between Airport Road and Jardine Road. If one entrance to Dry Creek Road is temporally closed, please have patience. You will need to use Highway 46 to access the opposite entrance. Map showing both roads is available here. This will be in affect for the next several months.
