School Counseling is a work of heart!

Our schools and our profession are being scrutinized more than ever and the public is realizing that we need more support for our students. O ur hearts ache for our colleagues and families in Florida. Sadly, we all know this is not an isolated incident. We help students in pain every day. We grieve with families that have lost someone and we try and encourage those in need everyday.

But we also see good and great every day. We see resilience and fortitude in young children who have faced insurmountable odds. We have seen strength from young people that we cannot fathom. We have seen our communities come together to support one another. As overwhelming as it may seem at times, always look for the light and hope.

Remember to take care of yourself so you can be available for others. Treat yourself to the walk, bath, trip, or quiet time that you need. Find your passion. Remember your "why" and  keep up the good work. Our students need you!

I'll be thinking of you this spring.

School Counselor Leadership Conference

Thank you to all who joined us for the 2018 School Counselor Leadership Conference! We had more than 300 people in attendance and the energy was great all day. We thank the presenters who gave their time and shared their best practices with us. We appreciate all the attendees who stepped away from their critical roles to build their own skills and network with their peers.

You can see all sessions and download available presentations on the online conference app . For those who want to share or rewatch, this is the Know Your Why video featuring Amazing Grace  we shared in the opening session.

If you attended the conference and took pictures, please share them in our 2018-19 photos folder. This is where you can add photos all year. We try and incorporate pictures in the conference program and slide show, and on social media @SanDiegoCOE. We love to see the good work you are doing!
National School Counseling Week

Thanks to everyone for sharing your pictures with #sdcounselors during National School Counseling Week. This year we celebrated the theme "School Counselors: Helping Students Reach for the Stars,"  from Feb. 5 to 9.
DACA Resources

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is an immigration policy available to undocumented immigrants who came to the United States before the age of 16. Although DACA does not provide a pathway to lawful permanent residence, it does provide temporary protection from deportation, work authorization, and the ability to apply for a social security number.

Recent government announcements and court cases on DACA have created confusion around who can apply, when they can apply, and how they can apply for DACA. To mitigate this confusion, there is an informational FAQ page and many more resources on the   Immigrant Legal Resource Center

Please note that DACA cases are still pending in the courts, and information is changing. As of March 2018, the DACA program is still partially available and will continue while litigation continues according to the USCIS guidelines issued in January 2018.

The Resilient Mindful  Learner Project:  Stress Management for  Educators Serving Youth
Unmitigated stress impacts the mind-body health of both students and educators. For students, stress is the enemy of learning and impacts their ability to focus, remember, pay attention, and manage their behavior. For educators, unmanaged stress can lead to emotional fatigue and burnout and impact relationships and job performance. This interactive workshop offered April 23-24 has a dual focus on promoting resilience and healthy stress coping skills for adults who work with youth, as well as providing them with the tools to teach students to recognize and manage their own stress.
