January marks not only the start of the new year, but also the holiday commemorating the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Through the many celebrations held earlier this week to honor the life of Dr. King, we were again reminded of Dr. King's legacy, including his role in changing the course of American society by promoting justice and equality under the law.

The Central New York Women's Bar Association is committed to the core values of diversity and inclusion that guided Dr. King's work. Under the leadership of immediate past president Bryn Lovejoy-Grinnell, CNYWBA partnered with the Onondaga County Bar Association's Family Law Section to offer its members the first program providing Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias CLE credit in Onondaga County. CNYWBA is currently planning a program based on diversity and inclusion for this spring.

Programming may be one small thing that CNYWBA, as an organization, can do to help diversity and inclusion flourish in our own community. As a professional association comprised of law students, lawyers, judges and other legal professionals whose purpose is to promote justice for all, we are empowered to use our varied individual backgrounds, experiences and roles to accomplish this important goal.

This year's theme is Pathways. Our first luncheon is Pathways to Health and will feature fitness, mental health and wellness resources, as well as a healthy (and tasty) lunch! CNYWBA's goal is to create conversations about how to successfully integrate wellness activities into a busy personal and professional lifestyle.

CNYWBA Seeking Donations for 

Women United's Professional Clothing Drive

Help us contribute to the United Way of Central New York's Professional Clothing Drive to benefit the Women's Opportunity Center, Onondaga Community College and YWCA's My Sister's Closet.

Over the next two weeks, CNYWBA will be collecting donations of women's clothing in the form of new or gently used blazers, suits, dresses, dress slacks, socks, winter coats, scarves, jewelry, blouses and (new) undergarments.

How to Donate: Gather and drop off the above-listed items at our January 25^th Mentoring Luncheon (CNY Philanthropy Center Ballroom 12:00 p.m. - 1:15pm).

CNYWBA HONORS CAREER OF FOUNDING MEMBER 

HON. KAREN UPLINGER

 

The Central New York Women's Bar Association was honored to join the Honorable Karen Uplinger's Syracuse City Court colleagues in hosting a reception to honor her on the occasion of her retirement.

The well-attended event took place on December 6, 2018 at the Chop House on Waring. Those in attendance heard warm remarks from Syracuse City Court Judge Theodore Limpert, CNYWBA's Immediate Past President Bryn Lovejoy-Grinnell, Fifth District Administrative Judge James Tormey and the Honorable Rosemary Pooler, United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

 

Before being elected to the Syracuse City Court bench, Judge Uplinger was a successful solo practitioner, a Family Court Hearing Examiner and a Syracuse Common Counselor. She is well known for being one of the Onondaga Five, a group of attorneys who led the effort to allow women to receive felony case assignments, attend Onondaga County Bar Association meetings and serve on the OCBA Board of Directors. In 2003, Judge Uplinger and the Onondaga Five were awarded the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York's Founders Award.

The Central New York Women's Bar Association celebrates the trailblazing career of Judge Uplinger and thanks her for her continued commitment to the advancement of women in the legal profession.

The Women's Bar Association of the State of New York ("WBASNY" ) strongly supports Governor Cuomo's call to enact into law the Reproductive Health Act and the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act - two of WBASNY' s most important legislative priorities for 2019.
