The Last Straw: Casa Switches Straw Policy and Ups Compost
Casa Nueva, a worker-owned restaurant specializing in local food, music, art, and drink has taken the
Zero Waste Pledge, committing to three steps they can take to divert more waste from the landfill.
To meet their Zero Waste Pledge goals, Casa will be switching to compostable straws, and only handing them out by request! According to
Ecocycle.org, "over 500 million straws are used in America every day, and many of them end their extremely long lifecycle in the ocean". As an item of convenience for the vast majority of us, refusing the single-use plastic straw is an easy and simple way for everyone to take action today to address plastic pollution.
Likewise, Casa will be expanding their composting capacity as a whole, with more buckets and pick-up days from Athens Hocking Recycling Center (AHRC). Along with their increase in compost collection, employees will be trained by Rural Action, about proper composting and recycling practices as part of the pledge program.
"Now that we've begun composting everything we can, there's hardly any trash anymore. Between food, paper towels, napkins and straws, we've gone from 3 full trash cans a week down to 1!" Grace Corbin, Marketing Coordinator at Casa Nueva.
The Zero Waste Pledge project creates solutions unique to your organization to reduce your trash and your carbon footprints. If your business is interested in taking the pledge, please contact
[email protected].

Students Lead Recycling Effort at Huntington, Adena
Student and member of the Youth Climate Action Team at Adena, John Hutson, had the following to say about Rural Action and his school.
"They encouraged us because we were learning so much about climate change, to bring something back to our school to try and make our own impact," he said. "They had certain examples like a trash audit, energy audit, certain things like that. We wanted to make a program that wouldn't be just a one-time thing."
This quote was excerpted from the Chillicothe Gazette.
