SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Today's Senior Spotlight features Liam Johnson of Benet Academy.   His is the sixth in our 2018 series which has now highlighted graduates from Naperville North, Benet, Naperville Central, and St. Francis. If you've followed this feature, you've seen hard evidence over the past two months that our graduates are well-prepared for success in whichever academic environment they select after they leave Saints Peter and Paul School.

Extra-curricular Involvement : Executive Board Leader of Campus Ministry; varsity basketball manager; Executive Board Leader of Political Club; and Senior "Logos" Retreat Leader

Awards or Accomplishments: Our school's Pro-Life group was named National Pro-Life Group of the year for 2017 by Students for Life of America. I am an Illinois State Scholar and have earned First Honors every semester. Also, on three occasions, I have been a Silver Medalist in the National Latin Exam.

Service Involvement:  I do service at Feed My Starving Children, Hesed House, Western DuPage Special Recreation Association, and Habitat for Humanity.  I have gone to the March for Life in Washington D.C. four times and have been involved in planning the trip the last two years.  I have helped younger students through our discipleship program through campus ministry.  I have also helped buy toys and groceries for less fortunate families during our annual Christmas Drive.

College Plans:  I am entering into the undergraduate seminary through the Congregation of Holy Cross and will be attending either the University of Notre Dame or Holy Cross College.  I plan to undergo formation and major in either Theology or American History.

Career Goals: I hope to advance through formation and seminary and become a Holy Cross priest.  From there, I will do whatever job I am assigned by the Congregation.  I'd like to do this because I believe God has called me to be his dutiful servant, and I want to help others grow as close to him as I have.

What I learned at SSPP that has helped me through High School:  Try to be friendly to everyone you meet.  Don't be afraid to talk to people, just reach out and go for it; if not, you will regret relationships you never formed.  I also learned that my faith is an integral part of me and that God has a special plan for me.   It just takes everyone a different amount of time to realize this.  Also, devote your efforts to doing what you love and loving what you do, and avoid getting caught up in stuff you don't like doing because that's just a waste of time.

Teacher at SSPP that helped me the most in high school:
I'm grateful for Mrs. Skroch, my junior high Social Studies teacher, because she challenged me when she knew I was slacking off.  She was not afraid to call me out for not doing work that I had the capability of doing.  Her class is the most similar to those at Benet, and she fostered a love in history that I still carry to this day.

Best SSPP experience I cherish: Not losing a football game in our JV and Varsity season was a big athletic thrill, as was kicking a field goal to win a game in 8th grade. Playing basketball on 80s Night was great fun and our class trip to Washington D.C was very memorable, as was our three days in Timberlee in seventh grade. I'd also have to add that learning about my faith in ways other than the classroom was another life changing experience.

Advice for Current Students: Take your faith seriously as it will help your decision making. Above all else, don't be afraid to branch out during freshman year and get involved in sports, clubs, and activities. You will regret it if you don't when filling out applications for college. Finally, try to achieve a balance between doing well in your studies and having fun. There's a happy medium that is attainable if you look for it.

When our school was founded in 1853....

.....families weren't worried about how well off their neighbors may have been with material acquisitions as the phrase Keeping Up with the Joneses first originated with the comic strip  Keeping Up with the Joneses,  in 1913. The strip depicts the social climbing McGinis family, who struggle to "keep up" with their neighbors, the Joneses of the title.
