Complete joy!
By Dr. Jeffrey Haggray
Whatever may be the tensions and the stresses of a particular day,
there is always lurking close at hand the trailing
beauty
of forgotten joy or unremembered peace.
Howard Thurman, "Meditations of the Heart"
Dear Colleagues in Ministry,
Greetings to you during this glorious season when we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, interpreting the rich meaning of resurrection faith for all our lives in a world filled with challenges. Indeed, our faith informs our lives today, not simply in the hereafter. The joy of the Lord is truly our strength when confronting tests and trials on every hand.
It is my pleasure to once again serve as your ecclesiastical endorser. We were well served by the leadership of the Rev. Kristina Moeller, whose voluntary departure from American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) earlier this year for family reasons left us disappointed, although better positioned to undertake new opportunities for Chaplaincy and Specialized Ministries.
We are grateful for the ministry of the Rev. Dr. Patricia Murphy, who is currently serving as interim director of Chaplaincy and Specialized Ministries. Alice Mitchell-Cross continues to serve well and tirelessly in ways that enrich our ministry. ABHMS will use this period of transition to explore strategies for enhancing and expanding our ministry in the years ahead. We invite your prayers and well wishes as we seek to serve each of you.
As you continue to serve in your various locations as chaplains and specialized ministers, I pray that joy will be renewed in your personal life by the power and spirit of the Living Lord that gives incomparable strength!
Be strong in the Lord!
Dr. Jeffrey Haggray is executive director of ABHMS, CEO of Judson Press
and endorser of Chaplaincy and Specialized Ministries.

Reflections: A living hope
By the Rev. Dr. Patricia Murphy
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
1 Peter 1:3
Greetings, friends...joyous Eastertide!
As your interim director of Chaplaincy & Specialized Ministries, I want to pause and say thank you for your service during the first quarter of 2018!
As we have just transitioned from the season of Lent (a time of fasting), we are now in the season of Eastertide (a time of feasting). We feast because we have an assurance of Hope--a hope that is a living hope. As chaplains and spiritual caregivers, we are charged to remind our care recipients that, because of the resurrection, our living hope is, indeed, a hope that is alive--a hope that is rooted and grounded with a confidence in God for a future without end!
As you continue to serve all over our nation--whether in the military, correctional facilities, hospitals, police or fire stations, college campuses, airports, cruise lines, sports arenas, pastoral offices, Starbucks, Panera, Barnes & Noble, the A Train, Charlotte Airport, the D.C. Metro, or wherever you are--remind the multitudes that, even if they find themselves in the midst of trials and storms, they should celebrate by feasting on this hymn penned in 1834 by the late minister Edward Mote:
My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
but wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
#Eastertide50DaystoPentecost!
#ALIVING HOPE!
