NORM EVENT
This past Thursday, Riverside and GPS celebrated our third norm event,  Be Safe - With Power Comes Responsibility This was a common initiative across grade levels to teach students how to make safe and responsible decisions.
The following questions/activities have been provided to help encourage positive decision making in your children:
  • Give your child choices to have him/her practice making decisions. "Do you want to wear the red or green shirt?" "Do you want turkey, chicken, or ham for lunch?
  • Open-ended questions, such as "What do you like about that?" Model decisions for your child, "I want to watch a funny movie tonight because I am in the mood to laugh."
  • Listen to your children's explanation with interest. Learning to explain their thinking helps them to think better.
  • Limit the number of choices depending on the child's age or ability.
  • Involve children in your own decision making. For example, "I am trying to decide whether to take up a sport or go to the gym. Which do you think I should do?" and go through the pros and cons of each choice.
Additionally, as an extension of the Be Safe event, GPS is hosting a  community event on Saturday, February 2, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Cos Cob Fire House. This is an opportunity to meet the people who keep you safe- police officers, firefighters and paramedics. Fun activities, drinks and snacks will be provided!
