Engaging Volunteers: Pledging Time and Talents
|
Last Sunday,
Chuck Thompson delivered a poignant sermon about caring. He shared a personal experience that was moving and uplifting. It was a touching example of when he felt cared about and a reminder that we all want to be cared about. Another point of his message was that it is important to also care about others.
We are in a time that underscores caring through volunteering. We deeply appreciate those who came to the chapel last Sunday to pledge. Please, put your time and talents into action by volunteering. Share the joy of caring! Complete a volunteer form in the chapel after worship on one of the next two Sundays or fill out a form online at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3DBWGKY.
This is a joyful time in our church. There is much to be celebrated: our new head pastor is coming, the budget has been established, the Confirmand Class is being presented, and we are moving forward on many other fronts. This is a time of joyful fellowship. A time to continue pledging our gifts of time and talents.
Blessings of joy to you and through you! John 9:11: "I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete." /

Mow to Celebrate Coming Right Up
|
Two rapidly approaching Sundays are bringing us more than usual cause for celebration. We're looking forward to May 13, when we welcome our confirmands as members of the congregation during ONE Worship.
Pat Flannagan conducts the mowing May 9-12, so we are sure of a lyrical lawn on Confirmation Sunday.
JB Madison takes over lawn care May 16-19, so we may be aflame with the sin of pride when we enter the church on the Day of Pentecost, May 20.
Wouldn't you like a shot at adding to our reasons to pray for forgiveness? Join the mowing team! We welcome men and women, adults and teens. Families too: younger children can move fallen branches and debris to the curb, and a parent or elder sibling can mow. It's easy, and you can mow only once or, if you choose, even thrice. Simply contact
Randy Cook at
npolecook@aol.com or 423-956-1541. If you're new to Scag mowers, he will be happy to give you a lesson on our Tiger Cat.

Sunday's music: Sunday's final hymn, "Draw the Circle Wide," is a wonderful reminder that "no one stands alone" and serves as encouragement to our church that, as Chuck Thompson reminded us last week, although diverse in some ways, we are one part of the body of Christ. The text is by Gordon Light (b. 1944) and, with music by Mark Miller, the hymn now appears in three hymnals. Composer Mark Miller is Associate Professor of Church Music and Composer-in-Residence at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, as well as a Lecturer in the Practice of Sacred Music at Yale University. He is also the Minister of Music of Christ Church in Summit, New Jersey, and Composer-in-Residence of Harmonium Choral Society in New Jersey. From 2002 to 2007 he was Director of Contemporary Worship at Marble Collegiate Church and from 1999 to 2001 was Assistant Organist and Music Associate at Riverside Church, both in New York City. Mark received his Bachelor of Arts in Music from Yale University and his Master of Music in Organ Performance from Juilliard.

Diane Joyce Bish |
Organist's footnotes: Diane Joyce Bish (b. 1941) is an American organist, composer, and conductor as well as executive producer and host of
The Joy of Music television series. This arrangement of "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing" (prelude) is typical of her pull-out-all-the-stops style with the lively engaging rhythms with which Ms. Bish thrills audiences in North America and Europe.
Dan Locklair was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1949. He was a professional organist by age 14; he is a graduate of Mars Hill College and also holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music. He is Composer-in-Residence at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he is also a Professor of Music. Locklair has written numerous works, ranging from organ solos to compositions for full orchestra, but he is most often noted for his sacred music. Peter Hardwick, writing in the magazine
The Diapason, has called
Rubrics "one of the most frequently played organ works by an American composer." "The Peace may be exchanged" was played for the funeral service of President Ronald Reagan in 2004 at the Washington National Cathedral, and again in January 2009 for the Martin Luther King Jr. service in the same venue during the Inauguration of President Barack Obama. One hears the Diapason (most prominent voice) above the soft accompaniment of string stops. Then halfway through the movement, this voice is joined by a second Diapason voice. To me, this second voice symbolizes the point at which the Peace has been passed, and accepted by others.
