The CMS ASC Infection Control Surveyor Worksheet
Happy New Year, Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) partners:

In the spirit of getting your Infection Prevention (IP) program off to a good start in 2019, this month’s Knock Out Infections—ASC Infection Prevention Initiative eblast has a link to the IP and control survey tool the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) surveyor’s use when they visit your facilities. Along with the resources we sent you last year, please use this CMS tool to assess your facility’s IP program. Completing this survey tool on your own is a great way to inform yourself as you complete your 2019 risk assessment and program plan.

Use this CMS tool to look for areas that need improvement, and come up with a plan to fix them. Be sure to document your work in your risk assessment and program plan. Remember—if you do not chart it, it never happened. Try to use that same mindset when you are completing your risk assessment and program plan. I will walk you through this CMS survey tool in our February webinar. The registration information is listed below. As always, please reach out to me if you have questions or need help.

Thank you for your hard work to keep California ASC patients safe. Let’s make 2019 your IP program’s best year yet.

Survey Survival

It is not often you have the questions given to you before an exam takes place. However, that is precisely what we have when it comes to the CMS Infection Control Surveyor Worksheet. How many times in the past have ASC administrators and providers dreaded the survey agency’s findings of deficiencies that could lead to potential negative consequences if not corrected?

This month’s Knock Out Infections—ASC Infection Prevention Initiative eblast includes questions surveyors will ask when they visit ASCs this year, as well as helpful suggestions on how to ensure a positive experience and score. By using this information—appropriate support from HSAG’s clinical improvement specialists in areas where assistance may be needed—your ASC can do very well come survey time. No one likes to take time from their busy practices to get ready for the survey agency. By making sure all is in order beforehand, the encounter can be very productive with learning taking place and patient safety improved. This in turn can translate into high patient-satisfaction scores and better patient outcomes.
