Monthly Newsletter
for the NAWBO San Francisco Bay Area Chapter

Message from the Board of Directors

NAWBO members and leaders from around the United States convened in sunny Scottsdale, AZ for the Leadership Development Training on Friday, January 25, 2019. NAWBO SFBA Board members Sydni Craig-Hart and Karla Campbell attended to gain new leadership tools and resources to bring back to the Chapter.

Sessions included:
  • Building a Thriving Culture
  • Managing Personalities, Conflict and Other Road Blocks to Successful Board Leadership
  • Becoming a Confident Negotiator- Manage the Inner Critic (presented by our own Tina Greenbaum)
  • A Quick Guide to Effective Board Management
  • You are 1:33 Million! Leverage Your Brilliance and Work from Strength
  • Sharing Best Practices
  • Empathic Leadership: Becoming a Leader Who CAREs
  • Leveraging Your Time & Strengthening Our Brand
  • Leadership: If It Has to Do With the CO, It Has to Do With You
  • Mastermind Discussion Groups

NAWBO unveiled some new initiatives, which members will learn about in the coming weeks and months, and CEO Jen Earle provided some inspirational words. Arizona Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Martha McSally also provided video messages of optimism and encouragement for women business owners and small business owners.

Engaging with other NAWBO Chapter leaders and members, as well as the NAWBO national team, was an extremely positive experience. And the SFBA leadership is excited!

So excited, in fact, that the board is planning a live webinar for members to discuss strategic ways to leverage the power of NAWBO, not just locally, but nationally.

Your continued involvement and support is very much appreciated.
With gratitude,

NAWBO SFBA Board of Directors

NAWBO Member Survey

NAWBO National is a resource to propelling women business owners into greater economic, social and political spheres of power worldwide. NAWBO is your voice to help change policies and improve the business environment for women.  How do they do that? They listen to you and share your vision.

For this reason, NAWBO conducts an  annual survey  to receive feedback and help put together  sound data  to share with policymakers and the press during National Small Business Week.  Your 10 minutes to take the survey could take your voice thousands of miles across the country.

So please, take the time to share your opinion. To be your voice, NAWBO needs to hear from you. Please click here to complete the survey.
Member Spotlight for December
Dr. Juliana Hynes, Juliana Hynes & Associates, Pittsburgh, CA

Julianna Hynes & Associates is a diversity leadership strategy and coaching firm. They help women leaders in healthcare at all stages of their leadership journey excel in their current roles and also prepare for their next opportunity.

After graduating from college, Juliana's career experiences were not always positive. She felt invisible to the leadership in spite of her efforts to advance. She didn't think they knew what to do or how to do it - especially with a young, Black, female professional. She learned to be a leader primarily from trials and many errors that could have been avoided with the right organizational support, mentoring and development opportunities. Those earlier experiences ignited her passion to see more women advance in leadership, sharing with them - either via her coaching, speaking or writing - the lessons she's learned over the years.

Julianna also had a mentor, a family member named Janet.  Janet was a graduate from Stanford, owned her own business and raised her two sons as a single mother and sole bread-winner. Had it not been for Janet, Julianna probably wouldn't have been able to navigate the culture and politics of her first job. Janet has since passed. However, the lessons she taught still remain with Julianna and she still models herself after her.

After attending a NAWBO conference last year, Janet found the speakers, the attendees and the overall energy to be really supportive and inspiring. She was compelled to join after that first experience. How can NAWBO members help Julianna? She's i nterested in meeting decision makers in healthcare (or other) organizations that have the budget and responsibility for talent development (coaching, training, etc.). These typically are those who have the title of Director/Senior Director and higher and either lead a team or support a team of leaders.

Fun Facts
  • Janet loves to dance!
  • She enjoys spending time with family and friends and she and her husband have a blended family of 5.
  • As long as she has fruit, cheese and crackers to munch on throughout the day, she's happy!
  • For special occasions, she enjoys dining at Crustacean in San Francisco.
