Developing Partnerships
We're positively changing how we work with organizations and City Departments! The Planning and Development Department's (P&D's) work with Complete Communities is setting a new threshold for collaboration, by bringing forth enhanced information and beneficial programs.
By working together, City departments can leverage limited resources and avoid duplication of efforts for a larger, more noticeable impact in the community. City staff are also looking for opportunities to work with outside partners and to seek grant funds wherever possible.
This new culture of working together will help all Houston neighborhoods, not just those in the Complete Communities program. Sharing and learning from other communities is encouraged throughout the Complete Communities process.

is a partnership between the Houston Public Library and Put It In A Book Foundation to address the literacy gap for underserved youth and expand access to quality books in communities.

Community Highlights
Acres Home
Another well-attended meeting was held December 12, focused on prioritizing projects and identifying partners. Look for details soon on our web page.
Next Steps:
On January 20, 2018, the Planning and Development Department will host a Complete Communities Design Workshop in Acres Home, at White Oak Conference Center, from 10 am - 4 pm. The objective of the meeting is to focus on projects identified from the community in relation to four topics: economic development, housing, public spaces and youth. The focus areas for the topics will include but are not limited to: "Downtown" W Montgomery, LARA lots, and Inwood Golf Course Park. Several architects and design professionals will be in attendance to help visualize the ideas from the community. This is an opportunity to help design economic development, housing, and public spaces projects.
Your draft Action Plan is complete! On Tuesday, January 30, Planning Department staff will present the draft action plan which has involved numerous community planning efforts, countless hours of surveys, and hundreds of participants. Join the open house to comment, ask questions, and review goals and actions, priorities, and metrics. The meeting will be held at Carver Magnet High School, from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm.
The Gulfton Complete Communities Neighborhood Support Team (NST) met on Tuesday, December 19, at the Southwest Multi Service Center. At the meeting, Planning and Development staff discussed projects identified by the residents from the November 9th CC Kick-off meeting.

The next Complete Communities Public Meeting will be held at the Burnett Bayland Community Center, 6000 Chimney Rock Rd., Houston, TX 77081 on Saturday, February 17, 2018, from 10 am - 12 pm.
Community Events:
VOICES Community Forum will be held at the Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center at 6500 Rookin St., Houston TX, 77074, on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, from 6 pm - 8 pm.
Safer Streets projects are under construction! Look for crosswalk painting and traffic control devices at the corner of Alder and Elm on the west side of Burnett Bayland Park. These tools add safety for pedestrians and cyclists in the area. Contact Wu Ying of P&D's Transportation Division for more information, by calling 832-393-6600

The Near Northside Neighborhood Support Team (NST) met on January 10, 2018, to review public comment received at the November kick-off meeting and to prepare for the next public meeting. The NST also spent time reviewing the Complete Communities draft action plan for the Near Northside.

Preparations are underway for the February 20th public meeting. Please check our web page for the details on the upcoming meeting.
Community Events:
Avenue CDC (Community Development Corporation) partnered with the City of Houston and other agencies on December 2, 2017, to unveil Scaped Senses, a public art installation in the Near Northside. Near Northside residents helped install the piece, which is a tribute to Josue Flores.
Second Ward
The draft Action Plan for Second Ward should be completed in February. The NST will meet to finalize the plan and it is expected to be ready for release by late February.
Next Steps:
Buffalo Bayou Partnership (BBP), the non-profit organization revitalizing Houston's historic waterway, is moving east. After developing Buffalo Bayou Park and other award-winning green space projects in the downtown area, BBP is making plans to transform the 5-mile stretch of Buffalo Bayou from US 59 to the Port of Houston Turning Basin.
BBP invites you to attend a community gathering to offer your input and ideas on Buffalo Bayou East Sector plans. Community Events:
BakerRipley, in partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts will be hosting "Art the Vote" on February 15.
Guided by teachers from the Museum of Fine Arts, students at BakerRipley's charter school, the Promise Community School at Ripley House, produced 188 artworks related to national identity, social injustice, and the importance of voting. The goal of Art of the Vote is to encourage students to express themselves through art. For more information call 713-315-6400.

Third Ward
Planning Department staff will present the draft Third Ward Action Plan to the community at a public meeting to be held February 7th. Everyone in the neighborhood is encouraged to attend and provide comments. Goals and actions outlined in the plan are a culmination of input from area organizations and feedback provided at public meetings. The next steps include a celebration of the final Action Plan and the beginning of implementation work. Come and celebrate with Third Ward!

Community Events:
A Safer Streets project has been designed for the corner of Tuam St. and Hutchins St. at the northwest corner of Emancipation Park. The temporary street improvements will add crosswalk striping and traffic calming devices. All tools seek to increase the safety of pedestrians and cyclists in the area. Work is scheduled to launch between January 8 and 31.
First Time Homebuyer Education session is Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 9 am at 3711 Southmore, Houston TX 77004. This is also held by the Neighborhood Recovery Community Development Corporation.
