Senior Spotlight: Alexis Eaton
Note: Each week, we will feature 1-2 seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.

I have had the pleasure of getting to know Alexis this year in my Math class. I immediately became accustomed to her radiant smile and laughter in class. From day 1, she showed how much of a hard worker she was and that she would be giving 110% each day. As time went on, I got to know her much better. I learned of her job at Market Basket and that she wants to work as a nurse or a paraprofessional after high school. She has a niece and nephew that she loves to death and spends as much time with as possible. She also talked about her surgery 2 years ago for her scoliosis, and the long and painful recovery that came with it. I personally believe that if she can overcome that, she’s set up to meet any challenge life can throw at her.

When talking to other teachers about Alexis, they had this to say:
Mrs. Vitolo “appreciates that Alexis has a love of art and is so willing to learn about art. She has taken a lot of different classes.”

Mrs. Graham “has Alexis for Advisory. Alexis is kind, warm, and energetic! She’s a great person to chat with and she works really hard both in and out of school!

Mrs. Healy “I've seen Alexis smiling away at the Plaistow Market Basket helping her customers as a cashier. She is a ray of sunshine in such a hustle-bustle of a store!
It’s clear to see that Alexis has such an amazing personality that she is going to go far. We all expect great things from her.
Senior Spotlight: Chad MacBride
Note: Each week, we will feature 1-2 seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.
This article was written by teacher Denise Alenskis
Chad was a member of the SRHS football team during his freshman and sophomore high school years. He would have liked to play all four years, however Driver Education and work schedules were in conflict with the games and practices. During freshman and sophomore years, Chad played several different positions including: running back, corner back and Chad’s favorite- wide receiver.

Currently, Chad is enrolled in an internship at Arwood Machine Corporation in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Chad operates a Swiss precision cnc machine that designs small parts used in the aerospace, medical, military & defense, and satellite industries. In an effort to stay current with updated information regarding the machines he operates, Chad participates in all of the company trainings. He’s interested in learning many jobs within the company and eventually working his way up into a supervisor position.

Outside of school Chad enjoys hanging out with his friends, buying new clothes and jewelry, and working on his Ford F-150.

Staff members had the following to share about Chad:
Marissa Vitolo-“Chad is polite, always willing to help, likes to watch shows like Weeds, Orange is the New Black, and certain comedians.”
Lauren Petraitis-“Chad is a very deep thinker and has original thoughts any time we analyze literature. His creativity is such a nice addition to class!”

Good Luck Chad! We will miss you!
Senior Spotlight: Aiden MacDougall
Note: Each week, we will feature 1-2 seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.
This article was written by teacher Josh White
Aiden MacDougall is a student that is an absolute pleasure to be around. He has grown tremendously as a student, athlete and a person during his four years as a high school student at SRHS. After reaching out to other teachers in the building to comment about Aiden, everyone seemed to have the same comment; “Aiden is just a great kid.”

Aiden is three sport, varsity athlete here at Sanborn. He is a member of the Golf, Hockey, and the MEN’s tennis program, all while maintaining above average grades. Aiden is a student who cares about his community, peers, and others. He is a part of the LEO (Leadership, Experience, Opportunity) Club here at SRHS. This club is focused on service in the community, which is why Aiden has volunteered at the Austin 17 house and done roadside cleanup.

Aiden’s English teacher, Nicole St. Jean had this to say about Aiden, “He is a lively member of the classroom, creating a sense of community among his peers. For our first unit in Senior English, he worked tirelessly on his college essay, revising draft after draft, to successfully make it the best it could be. He is genuine and driven and I am confident he will go on to do great things.”

Aiden will attend Keene State College in the fall where he will plans on majoring on Occupational Health and Safety. After college, Aiden plans on becoming a police officer. We will miss Aiden, here at SRHS, but know that he will go on to do great things!
Information For Potential SST Students
Seacoast School of Technology recently visited Sanborn Regional High School and presented information to the sophomore class about all twelve, two-year, career & technical programs offered.  Also discussed were the many benefits of attending SST such as hands-on learning, internships and job shadows, Career and Technical Service Organizations, college credits, earning industry-recognized certifications and meeting new people. Students were given an opportunity to ask questions and were invited to pick two programs of interest to visit at SST!

On January 29th, sophomores will attend SST Sneak Peek Day. They will visit their top two programs, meet the teacher and students, and experience first-hand what a class at SST is all about. Students interested in attending SST for the 2019-2020 school year can apply now. The application deadline is February 1, 2019.

Sanborn Starts Aviation Courses
Sanborn Regional High School is excited to be joining more than 100 schools in implementing the nationally recognized Aircraft Owners and Pilots Associations (AOPA) high school aviation science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum in the 2019-2020 school year.

Sanborn will offer the first two of four aviation courses which will be open to students in grades 9-12. These courses will be taught by math teacher Dr. Kevin Conant. Dr. Conant, a Sanborn graduate, has extensive experience in the aviation industry. Students will have a unique opportunity to experience a first-of-its-kind, comprehensive, four-course aviation study program aligned with rigorous math and science standards used in approximately 30 states nationwide. The program aims to provide students the skills they need to pursue aviation-related career and educational opportunities.

The courses are available in two pathways: pilot, and unmanned aircraft systems (drones).
Schools nationwide will be implementing the curriculum in the 2019 – 2020 school year, and 25 schools will also be testing the eleventh-grade curriculum. AOPA will release subsequent courses each year until curriculum is completed for grades nine through 12.

All curriculum materials are provided to Sanborn at no cost. Generous donations made to the AOPA Foundation fund the development and distribution of the curriculum. The courses are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and come with all the resources teachers need including lesson plans, presentations, assessments, and rigorous, engaging, and fun student activities.

According to a 2018 Boeing study, there’s a growing demand for qualified people to fill aviation industry jobs, and it’s not slowing down. Globally, 635,000 commercial aircraft pilots; 622,000 technicians; and 858,000 cabin crew members are needed within the next 20 years.

“With an unprecedented demand for careers in aviation, we are thrilled that so many high schools are utilizing our STEM curriculum to inspire students and give them the skills to pursue careers in aerospace,” said AOPA President and CEO Mark Baker. “Planting the seeds for the future workforce of our industry is part of AOPA’s mission to keep aviation vibrant. We are grateful to AOPA Foundation donors who make such programs possible. Their generosity is helping us make a difference in the lives of thousands of youth and to spur interest in aviation.”

Over the past 12 months, AOPA has worked with 80 schools across the country that implemented the ninth-grade curriculum, serving more than 2,000 students. In addition, 25 schools tested the tenth-grade curriculum.
Before implementing the curriculum, teachers are required to participate in a three-day professional development workshop at AOPA headquarters in Frederick, MD to gain a deeper understanding of the materials, learn about available resources, and network with other aviation educators. Dr. Conant is excited to be participating in this training in April of 2019.

To learn more about AOPA’s high school aviation STEM curriculum, contact the High School Aviation Initiative team at hs@aopa.org. You can also visit AOPA’s You Can Fly page

Come Play Lacrosse in Exeter!
Mr. Stack received the following request regarding a lacrosse opportunity in Exeter:

Dear Program Administrator: January 16, 2019

My name is Wayne Demers and I am a New Hampshire Youth Lacrosse Association (NHYLA)
Board member and the President of the Exeter Youth Lacrosse Association. I need your help in
getting the information below out to all of the parents in your data base.

It has come to my attention that US Lacrosse, in an effort to expand its diversity and inclusion
goals, has developed guidelines for adaptive lacrosse programs. According to US Lacrosse the
adaptive lacrosse program is an opportunity for people with physical and/or intellectual
disabilities to become involved with the game. Our goal is to become a state “where diversity
and inclusion are a fundamental part of the values and culture” of lacrosse in New Hampshire.
My vision for the state, at this early developmental stage, is to field 3 unified coed lacrosse
teams. One team to be located in the Seacoast of New Hampshire, one team to be located in
south central New Hampshire, and a third team to be located in the North Central New
Hampshire area. Ideally, team size would be 15 to 20 players along with an equal or greater
number of youth volunteers from area high schools. Games would take place on Sundays along
with the regularly scheduled NHYLA games.

Cost to participating families would be minimal. Each family would have to register their player
with US Lacrosse. The current cost for this registration is $35. Equipment would be provided by
each team (it would be available at each game/practice). We would be using soft lacrosse balls so
helmets and other protective gear would be optional. Cost for uniforms and game officials would
be absorbed by the various programs and NHYLA.

Player ages would vary between 10 and 21 years old. The lacrosse season in New Hampshire
begins in early April and ends the 2nd weekend in June with the NHYLA Festival. The Festival
hosts over 300 New Hampshire youth lacrosse teams, a little over 7000 lacrosse players, and this
would also be the final weekend for the unified teams to play.

To register a player parents can go to NHYLA.org, click on Home, Scroll down to Register
Online, and choose the area of play that would be most convenient for the family (i.e. Seacoast,
South Central, or North Central). It is my hope that we can recruit enough players to fill three
teams in New Hampshire. Anyone who has questions can contact me at wdemers@comcast.net.
The goal is to begin the season with the other NHYLA teams in early April.

I appreciate your time and help in getting the word out to as many New Hampshire families as
possible.

An Update From Southern Rockingham Coalition for Youth (SoROCK)
Hello Sanborn Community!

I hope everyone is staying warm. SoRock has just wrapped up our free Staying Connected with your Teen workshop through Teen Institute. Those who attended learned skills for increasing communication and decreasing conflict, ways to bond with their teen, strategies for preventing high-risk behaviors, how to involve your teen at home in problem-solving, decision making, and responsibility and more. If you missed the workshop but are interested in attending one in the future, please contact us for more information.

We will soon be wrapping out our winter session of the P.A.S.T.A Caregiver and grandparent support group with plans of a third session in the spring. The next meeting is on Monday 12/17 at 6pm at the Danville Community Center. We are currently looking for input from caregivers and grandparents in this position to help us prepare for, and possibly to attend, a meeting with one of our NH Senators in the New Year. The meeting will be focused on filling gaps and meeting the needs of this growing population for both caregivers and the children.

SoRock would like to acknowledge that the holiday season is a stressful one and is not necessarily joyful for everyone. Please remember self-care and stay connected to others. If you know someone who is struggling reach out and remind them, they are not alone. If you are in need resources, please visit
www.naminh.org.

SoRock is a community-based coalition with over a 25-year history of working collaboratively with federal, state and local organizations to help promote, support and sustain healthy choices for families in our communities. We do this by actively working to reduce and prevent alcohol, marijuana, prescription and other drug misuse.  SoRock relies on community engagement to be successful in it’s mission. Please visit our website sorocknh.org or follow us on social media @SoRockNH to stay up to date on prevention programming and events in the area.  If you would like to get more involved reach out to me at sorocknhcc@gmail.com or give me a call anytime at 603-642-3341 x 196

An Important Message From School Administrators:
PTO Clothing Donation Bins
When you drop your unwanted clothing off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students.

Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
