News Bulletin:
Legislature Passes Reproductive Health Legislation
Another exciting week in Albany! This week the legislature passed two more of the League's priority reforms - the Reproductive Health Act and the Comprehensive Contraceptive Coverage Act.
A special thank you and congratulations to the League's Women's Issues Specialist, Barb Thomas! Barb has been working on these issues for many years and we are so grateful for her expertise and persistence on these crucial women's health reforms.
The League participated in several events throughout the day including a large press conference and rally. After passage, the Governor immediately signed the Reproductive Health Act, legislation that will codify Roe v. Wade in New York State. This legislation also takes abortion out of criminal code and moved it into health code.
The legislature also passed the Comprehensive Contraceptive Coverage Act, legislation that mandates insurers to cover all forms of birth control, and the "BOSS Bill", which will prohibit employers from discriminating against employees based on the employees' or dependent's reproductive health decisions.
Governor Signs Voting Reform Bills
On Thursday the Governor signed the package of voting reforms passed by the legislature. We were honored to attend the ceremonial bill signing in New York City. The League's President, Dare Thompson, stood right over the Governor's shoulder as he signed one of the bills. It was a small but impactful event.
Next Week's Session Highlights
The legislature has promised to pass a package of gun control reforms early next week including the bump stock ban and red flag bill. They are also expected to pass the Child Victims Act.
