The California Immunization Coalition (CIC) draws its strength from its robust and diverse partners. For 20 years, CIC has been dedicated to achieving and maintaining full immunization thanks to collaborators like you.
The Summit's keynote presenter will be Peter Hotez, MD, PhD, of Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital. Dr. Hotez is the founding dean of The National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, as well as director of the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development.

World Health Organization:
Anti-Vaccine Movement a Top Global Threat
The World Health Organization (WHO) named vaccine hesitancy, the reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite available vaccines, among its recently released list of
10 global health threats for 2019
. It joins air pollution and climate change, a worldwide influenza pandemic, weak primary health care and HIV in the listing, among others. WHO pledged to make them priorities for the organization and its partners throughout the year.
Numerous media outlets covered this public health crisis including U.S. News and The New York Times . The New York Times op-ed had a particularly strong and useful call to action so be sure to give it a read.
While vaccine hesitancy is clearly a global problem, public health advocates in the United States have a important responsibility to respond to those who promote bad science and opportunists that seek to confuse and mislead the public. CIC is committed to working on this challenge with you and all of our partners.

Measles! Measles! Measles!
After years of declining rates, global measles cases and deaths rose in 2017 and continued through 2018. And it's not just "other countries." Measles are back in the United States. As we go to press, the Vancouver / Portland area near the Oregon/ Washington border has declared an emergency with at least 23 confirmed cases of measles ( majority are under ten years old and unvaccinated) and New York is battling its worst measles outbreak in decades.
The WHO Region of the Americas lost its status as having eliminated measles. And due to ongoing outbreaks, measles is again considered endemic in Germany and Russia. If anyone in your family, or any of your patients are traveling this winter, make sure they're up-to-date on recommended vaccines.

During this Clinician Outreach and Communication Activity (COCA) call, clinicians will learn about 2018 - 2019 influenza activity and hear an overview of CDC's recommendations for health care providers regarding influenza vaccination and the use of influenza antiviral medications for the 2018 - 2019 influenza season, including a new antiviral medication approved by the FDA in October 2018.

Preteen Vaccine Week 2019
March 3-9, 2019
Preteen Vaccine Week (PVW) is a California observance held each winter. The goals are to promote the preteen doctor visit and to raise awareness about routinely-recommended immunizations for preteens.

International HPV Awareness Day on March 4. PVW works best when our partners, such as schools, providers, and local coalitions, help promote it as well. Whether you're planning your first PVW or your 10th, you're welcome to participate in the statewide planning calls. Please contact

CIC Welcomes Intern Ethan Posard!
California Immunization Coalition welcomes new intern, Ethan Posard.
Ethan is a senior in high school and the author of The Shots Book; A Little Brother's Superhero Tale, and El Libro De Las Vacunas. Grant awards from the American Academy of Pediatrics California Chapter, First Five California, and Rady Children's Hospital published his books and launched his public health advocacy campaigns when he was a freshman in high school. Over 28,000 copies of his book have been distributed in two languages over four continents.
Ethan is a strong proponent of using art and storytelling to make science more accessible. By using various communication methods, the medical community can combat the spread of false information which threatens public health. Over 300,000 of his #FightFlu Campaign stickers created for the NFID and CDC flu season press conference have now been distributed internationally.

CDC Childhood Immunization Champion Award
Nominations Due February 8, 2019
The CDC Childhood Immunization Champion Award recognizes individuals who make a significant contribution toward improving public health through their work in childhood immunization. This year, a new partner will join CDC to honor those who are doing an exemplary job or going above and beyond to promote or foster childhood immunization among children 0-2 years old in their communities.
One Champion from each of the 50 U.S. states, 8 U.S. Territories and Freely Associated States, and the District of Columbia will be honored. The awardees will be announced during National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW), April 27-May 4, 2019.

New App from The CDC
Pneumo recommendations can be perplexing! CDC recently launched an app to help providers determine which pneumococcal vaccines your patients need. The PneumoRecs VaxAdvisor mobile app
:
- Incorporates recommendations for all ages
- Helps interpret schedules for catch-up vaccination
- Helps with vaccination based on medical indications
Users simply enter a patient's age, note if the patient has specific underlying medical conditions, and answers questions about the patient's pneumococcal vaccination history. The app provides patient-specific guidance consistent with the ACIP-recommended immunization schedule.

CDC recently launched a new
video for parents that takes viewers on the journey of a childhood vaccine from development through safety monitoring after a vaccine is licensed and introduced in the population.

he 5-minute video explains the three phases of clinical trials, vaccine manufacturing, and how a vaccine is added to the U.S. recommended immunization schedule.

Flu activity is surging in California and flu activity is elevated in many other states. Make sure you and your patients, colleagues, and family are vaccinated. Influenza has already claimed the lives of two young children so far this season (
Stanislaus
and
Riverside
Counties). These tragedies serve as a reminder that influenza can be deadly.
