| Dear Skokie Families, Despite the chilly, snowy weather, Skokie managed to host its second Career Day with great success today! Our students had the opportunity to cycle through four sessions of their choosing, giving them the chance to meet with professionals in a wide variety of fields: engineering, advertising, finance, animation, military, medicine, and many more. The day began with an opening assembly hosted by a professional animator. He spoke to our students about how his love for drawing evolved in a career in which he was able to showcase his art through animated film. Finally, we closed the day with an assembly in which five student generated products were pitched to a panel of community professionals. Each of the products were showcased with a short film introduction, followed by questions for the students by our panelists. We are grateful to Dr. Trisha Kocanda, Mr. Nat Roberts and Ms. Val Haller for serving on our panel of professionals. A great big shout out to our student entrepreneurs: Philip Baker, Anthony Hartman, Brett Hanafan, Douglas Anglemeyer, Sophie Mueller, Bobby Cassin, Will Doonan and Elle McFarland. We are proud of you for sharing your creativity and curiosity with your teachers and peers today!
Finally, thank you to all of the guest speakers who came in to inspire our students today. We could not have made today happen without your partnership, and know you took time out of your day to be with us. It is days like today when it couldn't be more clear what a special place our Skokie School is because of the people that are a part of its community.

A Note from the KW Department...
The KW department is hoping for snow! Our PTO generously purchased snowshoes to help our students enjoy more outdoor time during the winter months. KW is planning to take students outside snowshoeing beginning next week. To participate, students will need hiking boots or snow boots, a winter coat, hat, and gloves/mittens. Snow pants or gators are also recommended. We will let students know the day before, if their class will be going outside to snowshoe.

After School Sports will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays 3:35-4:30, beginning 1/28 and ending 5/17
Climbing club sessions will begin for 6th graders, January 29th. For 5th graders, Feb. 19.

ALL WINNETKA FAMILIES WELCOME!
The Skokie School and Carleton Washburne School are thrilled to co-host this year's Jungle Jog on Saturday, March 16 at 8am. This is the 5th year that Skokie has helped to organize this race, and now we look forward to expanding our invite to the Winnetka Public Schools Community at large. The race begins at the Winnetka Train Station and runs a 5k loop along the Green Bay Trail.

Career Day
Today was a special day at Skokie: Career Day. The students had the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers, as well as showcase some of their unique inventions during the afternoon assembly.
In addition to seeing the excitement on the students' faces as they sketched characters from the
Lion King
and learned about various careers, one of the highlights of the day was actually hearing feedback from presenters. Many of them shared that presenting about their careers made them realize how passionate they were about their work.
In the spirit of the day, consider taking some time this weekend to ask your child about what he/she learned from today and talk about your own career path. Not only will they learn something new about you (even if they have heard the story before!), but you might find yourself feeling inspired as well.

Referendum Update
On December 18, 2018, the District 36 School Board prioritized the capital improvement projects embedded in our Educational Master Facility Plan. To fund these priorities, the School Board unanimously approved a $90.6 million referendum for community vote on April 2, 2019. This reflects projects totalling $100.6 million, less $10 million of District reserves.
The priorities identified in the referendum are focused on addressing needs, such as providing ADA access, mitigating water pipes with elevated lead levels, enhancing safety and security to align with modern standards, and improving learning environments that have remained untouched for decades. The plan also calls for operational efficiencies by consolidating from five schools to four.

Childhood anxiety and school refusal is at an all-time high, and arming kids with healthy coping strategies is more important than ever. Are your children focused on avoiding failure or are they operating from a place of achieving to their greatest ability, based on their individual strengths and weaknesses? This presentation will review specific interventions designed to assist children in managing their anxiety, as well as promoting increased motivation, healthy goal setting and active school engagement. Learn how to better develop parenting strategies to assist children with healthy coping responses and engage them in effective communication and language that promotes self-advocacy and independence. Ms. Rhew will provide essential tools for parents to assist their children in building resilience, navigating stressful situations, and increasing self-advocacy and problem solving abilities, thus leading to greater self-confidence and self-reliance.
Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten pre-registration for 2019-2020 is now open. Children who will be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2019, are eligible to enroll. The District's Kindergarten Committee and Central PTO unanimously approved shifting to an online process versus an on-site process. This shift minimizes the time needed to pre-register and respects the busy schedules of our families.
The Registration process is completed in two steps:

Provide proof of residency (documents can be uploaded online): child(ren)'s original birth certificate and a parent photo ID will need to be provided in person. Opportunities to do so will be made available in Spring 2019.
