Pictured here is actress Cassandra Peterson all decked out as horror hostess, Elvira Mistress of the Dark. Elvira is Cassandra's most famous character. Prior to that she was a showgirl, (who dated Elvis briefly) and had dancing and modeling gigs.  As the host of the weekly horror movie presentation, "Elvira's Movie Macabre," Cassandra quickly achieved genre icon status. Between her revealing, gothic appearance, quirky personality, and Valley girl-type speech, her rise in popularity came as no surprise.  The late 1980s and 1990s brought a string of Elvira-themed comics and computer games such as: "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark", "Elvira 2: The Jaws of Cerberus", and "Elvira: The Arcade Game."  There are also two Elvira-themed pinball machines and she was also featured in the PlayStation3 game "Pain" in 2007.

Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg awarded Public Information Office Alyson Crean a Chief's Commendation during last week's awards ceremony at the Grand Key Resort.
"For over a decade she has made herself available on nights, weekends, holidays outside of her normal schedule," said Chief Brandenburg. "Ms. Crean goes above and beyond to capture the Department's highlights, festivities, and investigations," he said, noting that she always steps up in hard times as well.
"Most recently, Ms. Crean organized the changing of command ceremony," he said. "This event captured a milestone in the history of not only the police department but the city of Key West as well. Adding to the challenge of this day, the changing of command was followed by the promotion of three officers to their new respective ranks. Ms. Crean's attention to detail, multitasking abilities and planning were on display as the event went flawlessly."

From 1977 - 1993 the Full Moon Saloon was the place to hang in Key West and listen to the music of bands such as Bill Blue and the Nervous Guys or The Pacific Orchestra. The moon was dark, the AC and the beer were always cold, and the music was the best in town.  The crowds were mostly locals and included the famous and some of the infamous. When they moved from United Street to 1202 Simonton (current location of Camille's) Jimmy Buffet opened the new venue and returned to sit in often. It closed July 18, 1993 - Bill Blue played until 2pm the next day.

Nance Frank sends regards and gives us some of the Line Up for the 2019 Season : "The Saints" by Mike Marrero Feb. 9. "Journey to Paradise" by Peter Vey; Feb. 16.  A Special Presentation at Temple B'Nai Zion on 750 United St. 5:30-6pm...A Panel Discussion "Jewish Friends & Conchtown Neighbor" ; then 6:30-7:30p An Exhibition by Mario Sanchez.  Then Back at The Gallery on Greene from March 6-14 Exhibition by Mario Sanchez.  "Blue Vistas" bu Priscilla Coote Reception Feb. 23. Here is a Brief Description of Mike's Exhibition from Nance

Mike Marrero grew up in Key West surrounded by La Regla de Ocha or Santeria and tales of The Saints.  These were not the Christian Saints you are most likely familiar with. They are the Yoruba Gods and Goddesses brought from West Africa. These are The Saints that exact the knowledge that seven ears of corn placed in a brown paper bag and then burned in the sand could bring you good luck. Mike learned about Chango (the owner of fire, lightening, thunder and war, also patron of music and dance) and Santa Barbara (syncretized with Chango)  and O'Batala, (Sky Father  and creator of all The Saints or Orishas).  They are an inseparable part of his heritage and the cultural fabric of this island.  His goal with this exhibit was to recreate The Saints, not as they are, but as he imagined them as a child.  How he saw them through the prism of his memories and his families beliefs.  Marrero trains his camera on his native island and draws inspiration from his childhood memories, capturing the pathos of ordinary life as it was then, with a sophistication that belies his generation. As Marrero matures as a photographer, playwright, film maker and father his fast evaporating roots mean more to him than ever.

GRAND OPENING FEB 1, 2019 AT FLORIDA KEYS COUNCIL OF THE ARTS BUILDING (GATO CUBAN CIGAR FACTORY) 1100 SIMONTON ST.
Curated by Alaen Ledesma Fernandez

The Arts Council of the Florida Keys is proud to announce the next show: "Visions of Cuba," an exhibition of contemporary Cuban art. An opening reception on Friday, February 1, from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the historic Gato Building, is open to the public. This collective exhibition represents the work of art of more than 50 outstanding Cuban artists who now live in cities around the world, many of which attended the ISA, Higher Instance of Art in Havana, and have participated in the Biennial of La Havana.
This presents a unique opportunity for both artists and attendees, in the sense that the Gato Building itself is full of Cuban heritage. José Martí made a historical presentation during his first visit to Key West in 1891, and the building was originally a Cuban cigar factory. "Visiones de Cuba" will present a variety of artists from the community, from students to professionals, and will promote the significant cultural connection between Cuba, Key West, The Gato and the Artists.
Join us to meet artists, enjoy the food sponsored by Eduardo's Table, the wine presented by Key West Food and Wine Festival and the Latin music presented by Mateo on guitar. Free parking available.  The exhibition is part of the Arts in Public Buildings program of the Council of the Arts, designed to offer an opportunity for artists to exhibit their work beyond a traditional gallery space and improve the environment of those who work and visit the Gato Building.
This exhibition was organized and curated by the cultural promoter and curator of Cuban art: Alaen Ledesma Fernández and sponsored in part by the Florida Keys Arts Council, the State of Florida: Division of Cultural Affairs, as well as other supporters . Additional support comes from donations from visitors to the show. For more information, call the Arts Council at 305-295-4369 or send an email to  info@keysarts.com

KEY WEST POETRY GUILD EVENT 2/8 at The Key West Theater
Birthday Party for U.S. Poet Laureate Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979), with poems written in and about Key West by her and by other Key West poets about her life in Key West, 1938-1949. Feb. 8, 2019,  5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.  Seating limited. Key West Theater, Back Stage Room, 512 Eaton St., KW. Presented by members of the Key West Poetry Guild.  Info.:  504-228-2899; info@thekeywesttheater.

On February 8, the 108th birthday of U.S. poet laureate Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979) will be celebrated at Key West Theater's Back Stage Room, 512 Eaton Street, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.  (Seating is limited.)  Key West poet laureates, members of the Key West Poetry Guild, and others present some of Bishop's often enigmatic but descriptive Key West poems, along with their own and others' poems about her life and the house she loved here.  There will be birthday cake and other refreshments.  Bishop was initially drawn to Key West for its quiet (back then), its characters, fishing, and Sloppy Joe's Rumba Saturday Nights, and she wrote evocative poems that will be read,  like "The Fish," "Roosters," and much else about Key West, including her own 35th birthday poem, "The Bight."

Blind Spots" exhibit at The Studios of Key West reveals modern slavery through imagery and art installations: Special preview party on February 7

On Thursday, February 7, The Studios of Key West welcomes the public to the Key West premier of "Blind Spots- Modern Day Slavery Exposed," with a special opening reception in the XOJ Gallery from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. The traveling exhibit is part of a multi-faceted project developed by Key West resident and activist Erika Biddle to encourage action against human trafficking and child exploitation.

"This strikes home as much as any other violent act that we see in the world today," says Keys to Be the Change Founder and exhibit sponsor Heidi Golightly. ""Blind Spots" offers not only awareness but inspiration for concrete actions that people of all ages can take to combat this worldwide epidemic."

The exhibit includes images and text by renowned photographer U. Roberto (Robin) Romano portraying  child laborers from across the globe (that have since been freed and rehabilitated) , art installations by local artists Cricket Desmarais and Gretchen Mills, ceramics by the Florida Keys Community College Mudpie Club, the work of several participating local students, and artwork from local teen traffic victims.

"I n recent years, reports that Monroe County children have been victims of sex trafficking targeted by groups from the mainland have shocked the community," says Biddle.  "It's a problem that has remained largely out of the public eye, at least in the world's richest nations."

The  Studios will also host a film screening of "Children of Bal Ashram" o n Saturday, February 9 at 7:00pm , a film that documents the work of Nobel Peace Prize recipient Kailash Satyarthi, who liberated and rehabilitated more than 87,000 children from child labor, slavery, and trafficking. A Q & A with director Len Morris and a discussion about what actions can be taken to protect the innocent will follow.

In addition, the outdoor exhibit "Bought and Sold" by Kay Chernush will be presented by ArtWorks For Freedom at the African Cemetery on Higgs Beach, a location selected to honor individuals who were abducted to be sold as commercial goods but were rescued by the U.S. Navy in 1860.

"As the mission of Keys to Be The Change is to empower young people to realize their full potential while taking action to create positive change in the world, we are eager to support this project in hopes that our community will band together to put an end to human trafficking once and for all," says Golightly.

"Blind Spots" is free and open to the public throughout the month of February.  Sponsored by Florida Keys Council of the Arts and Keys to Be the Change. For more information, visit TSKW.org or contact The Studios at 305-296-0458 or Erika Biddle at  305-567-1610.  The Studios of Key West is located at 533 Eaton Street, with gallery and box office open Tues-Sat, 10am-4pm.

Frangipani Gallery rings in the new year with new work from David Scott Meier, Gabrielle Wilson and Marc Hacker.  Artists reception was Friday January 4, 6-8 PM as part of the Upper Duval First Friday Art Stroll.  She show will remain up through January.

Roaming the streets of Key West is endlessly entertaining.  The architecture, the decor, the characters all blend together to make Key West what it is.  Every corner has a story unfolding, every porch a vignette, providing never ending subjects for artists.  In addition to the human characters which are so often reflected in the facades of their homes, there are the critters.  Cats are hanging at Hemingway's and on less famous stoops and their friends the roosters have the run of the city.  For those who venture offshore, there is a myriad of sealife dancing beneath the surface.  Gabrielle Wilson's paintings are part realistic and part whimsy and are a reflection of Key West's celebration of life and all its colors. David Scott Meier explores pattern and abstraction in his new collection of paintings.  Persistent themes of tropical flora and stylized avian inhabitants occupy the new oil paintings. Marc Hacker is interested in elegance in form.  His new ceramics explore the purity of simple shapes in stoneware and raku.

Key West Art & Historical Society invites public to embark on a virtual journey aboard Flagler's Overseas Railway

A year after Key West Art & Historical Society unveiled a newly renovated "Overseas to the Keys: Henry Flagler's Overseas Railway" permanent exhibit at the Custom House Museum, its virtual counterpart is now available to researchers, students, historians, history buffs, and Flagler fans all over the world.  The Society's new online exhibit, "Henry Flagler's Overseas Railway Timeline," is a multi-media experience created by Annette Liggett, Brewster Chamberlin, and Society Curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D. that details the construction process of the engineering feat that joined mainland Florida to Key West in 1912. Visit  kwahs.org/education/overseas-railway-timeline to explore the "Eight Wonder of the World," and check back for additional related online features and downloadable curriculum that will be launched over the coming six months. Key West Art & Historical Society presents "Art & Puns: The Whimsy of Ferron Bell" exhibit at Custom House Museum

Key West Art & Historical Society celebrates the legacy of one of the island's most clever visual artists with "Art & Puns: The Whimsy of Ferron Bell" in the Bumpus Gallery of the Custom House Museum located at 281 Front Street.  The exhibit runs through February 10, 2019.  The exhibit spotlights the quirky late artist's trademark visual wit and whimsy, featuring  work from private Key West collectors, personal photographs, and newspaper clippings about the unique personality  widely known for his  off-the-wall and humorous creations.

A self-taught artist,  Thomas Ferron Bell began his career at the age of 16 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, moved to Fire Island Pines, New York when he was 21, later splitting his time and talents between there and Key West, Florida. Bell worked full time as an artist, cultivating his audience and frequently bartering and donating his work to fundraisers in the Key West community.
