What's New
  • The Fernway Forward campaign, established to support the rebuilding of Fernway Elementary School, totals just over $70,000. The Shaker Schools Foundation thanks the Fernway community for its generous support. A special thanks to Jean Reinhold, who has personally raised over $5,000 from Fernway friends living all over the country. Funds raised by the community will focus on the outdoor space at Fernway, based upon input from the community and Fernway Principal Chris Hayward. Look for details on a Fernway Forward event to be held the evening of May 4 at Juma. Remember: every dollar counts! Make your donation now.
  • The City Planning Commission has granted partial site plan approval for building additions and improvements at Fernway Elementary School. Both the commission and the Architectural Board of Review agreed to fast-track the building plans so the fire-damaged school can be reopened by August 2020 as planned. The planned addition will include two new classrooms as well as an elevator and an entry ramp to make the school compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Gilbane Building Co. estimates the project to take four months for design and 14 months for construction. In November, the Board of Education decided to approve spending $3 million plus the $14.5 million insurance settlement on the renovation project. A second phase of the project, paid for by potential fundraising and grant opportunities, will produce additional funds.
