Folsom Cordova's annual Employee Recognition event was held Tuesday, May 1 at the Folsom Community Center and was hosted by Cordova High graduate and Good Day Sacramento Co-Host
Ken Rudulph.
Superintendent Sarah Koligian announced to a spirited crowd of nearly 600 employees, the FCUSD Employees of the Year:
Administrator of the Year is Linda Burkholder,
Director of Family Engagement and Support Services, Classified Employee of the Year Head Custodian Brent Jones of Williamson Elementary, and Teacher of the Year is veteran science teacher Kristy Guarienti
of Folsom High.

| FCUSD students honored for learning multiple languages |
Students from Cordova High, Folsom High, and Vista del Lago High schools - 187 in total - were among the 1,600 in Sacramento County honored earlier this month for achieving high levels of proficiency in both English and at least one other language.
Folsom High hosted the annual State Seal of Biliteracy Recognition Ceremony on April 18, where students, parents, school staff and community leaders highlighted the importance of being able to speak in more than one language in an increasingly diverse and rapidly evolving world.
The seal is awarded to seniors who have demonstrated English competency, as well as competency in another language by meeting specific criteria.
In order to earn the seal, students must demonstrate English competency by scoring proficient on an English Language Arts assessment and excel in high school English classes required for high school graduation. In addition, students demonstrate competency in another language by taking four years of a world language or passing a language test such as the Advanced Placement exam.
In addition to English, this year's Seal of Biliteracy recipients in Sacramento County are proficient in 23 other languages, including: American Sign Language, Arabic, Armenian, Cantonese, Dari, Farsi, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Hmong, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Mandarin, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Vietnamese. Several students earned Seals in multiple languages.

UC Info Night supports students and families on college journey
|
No need to travel up and down California to learn about the many University of California campuses. They came to us!
Representatives from 7 UC schools were on hand at Folsom High School on April 19, to give students information on the application process and answer individual questions.
Over 500 students and family members from all of our high schools, as well as neighboring school districts were there.
This is the first UC Information night a public school district has hosted in our region, and we are grateful for this partnership in education.

| Student work showcased at FCUSD Writing Celebration |

Eighty students from our schools including Kinney High, Cordova Meadows, Cordova Villa, Empire Oaks, Folsom Hills, Gold Ridge, Mather Heights, Peter J. Shields, Russell Ranch, Sandra J. Gallardo, Sutter Middle, Theodore Judah, Vista Del Lago, and Williamson had their writing featured at a Districtwide celebration after being selected by teachers from their respective schools.
The event showcased students' works through an open-mic style evening, where students presented pieces of poetry, narratives, PSAs, and other creative writings to parents and Folsom Cordova employees.
The FCUSD Writing Celebration was created by Mather Heights Elementary teacher Sarah Kirby-Gonzalez and Gold Ridge Elementary teacher Terry English as a way to celebrate literacy and writing among students. The event over the years has grown to encompass larger numbers of schools, Kirby-Gonzalez said.
"What started as a small potluck celebration at the Cordova Lane Center years ago, it has grown into something very special."

| First Annual Adult Education Job Fair has big turnout |
In April,
Adult Education partnered with the Folsom Cordova Community Partnership
Job Center to host the first annual Job Fair at the Walnutwood Campus in Rancho Cordova.
It was a big success! Over 25 employers came to answer questions and accept job applications. Not only were our students in attendance, ready with resumes in hand, but members of the community were invited as well to learn about education and career opportunities at our
Adult Education campus, and apply for jobs!
Whether you wish to take skill based courses, obtain a high school diploma, or connect with job opportunities, Adult Ed is a great place to start.

| FCEA &FCUSD Joint Negotiations Update: April 27, 2018 |
Bargaining team members from FCUSD and the Folsom Cordova Education Association (FCEA), which represents about 1,200 teachers, counselors, and other certificated staff throughout the District, met on April 27 a regularly scheduled bargaining session.
Additionally, FCUSD and FCEA worked collaboratively to develop a timeline, based on information from the state's May budget revise, for a counter offer by FCUSD to be presented and negotiated. The negotiations teams agreed to schedule meetings over the summer months to work toward a settlement.
Team members also discussed job descriptions, contract language, special education matters and other items.

Youth drug prevention resources for families
I
n the month of April 2018, the Folsom Cordova PTA Council, Folsom Cordova Unified School District, local law enforcement, and community partners held a series of Drug Awareness Forums in both Folsom and Rancho Cordova.
More than 150 attendees learned about drug trends among youth, what warning signs to look for, and resources available in the community.
The
Drug Awareness Forum page provides information on resources for the entire community, including full video from one of the forums (filmed by Folsom High School's media students), links to PowerPoint presentations from panelists and a list of community resources.
