2018 Industry Forum: The Industry & The Art

It's that time again to get ready for our biggest event of the year. Plan now to join us at the 2018 Industry Forum on Wednesday, March 7th and experience an evening of engagement, inspiration, and renewed connections!

Plan on arriving early this year as we've moved our 5 x 10  presentations to the 4:00 PM hour. You won't want to miss any of these 5 inspired design professionals from our area. They will challenge you with their unique approach to problem solving - making this a favorite attraction of the Industry Forum every year.

If you are a designer, architect, engineer, builder or property manager, you will find an informative and stimulating look at what's new and innovative in the construction industry. READ MORE >

President's Message: A History of the Industry Forum
Ellen Onstad, CSI, CDT, Board President

I hope you are all excited and planning on attending the Industry Forum coming up March 7th. I haven't purchased my ticket via the Portland CSI Webpage, but I also think there are some sponsors out there who may have extra tickets; it's just a matter of calling them.

We are also offering an Emerging Professional code for those who have less than ten years in the industry. Please call Geoff Jenks or Ali LaManna from the Emerging Professionals committee to get the code and sign up.

In preparing for this article and the event next month, it occurred to me that the Industry Forum or Products Fair has been a part of Portland Chapter CSI since 1974 (when we had the national conference here - Portland OR in 74!). The event has gone through major changes in the last 44 years. It started at the Red Lion Hotel, moved to the Convention Center, then the World Trade Center, and now is held at the Portland Art Museum.

It has changed leadership. According to the Portland CSI Operations Guide, Tom Shea and Larry Arnold were appointed co-chairs in 1974. Cherie McNabb ran it successfully until 2005 when I took over. Cornelia Gibson was co-chair for both Cherie and I. Ed Macsisak, took it over for a few years before it changed to the Industry Forum in 2009.

The committee has done a wonderful job in putting together speakers for the 5x10 presentatios (five presentations at ten minutes each) and the latest speed education.

Our Keynote this year is Allison Williams, FAIA a dynamic speaker, who we are excited to have in our fair city.

Thinking about the history of these major events for our Chapter, I found myself staring at the walls of my office and the awards I received for the years I was involved. I began looking at old issues of The Predicator. Did you know old issues of the newsletter are on our website starting from 2005? The May 2006 edition included an article called 'Perky's Notes' by J.P. "Perky" Kilbourn, PhD, CSI (my mom). The article was about the Products Fair and took a look at different perspectives of those in the construction industry and how they viewed the value of the Products Fair. It amazed me how some of the "thoughts" she listed still apply:
  • A space to meet and greet old and new business contacts.
  • A place to learn about new products which will probably be incorporated into construction in future years.
  • The potential to obtain necessary continuing education credits.
We hope everyone will attend this year's Industry Forum, be sure to stop by the membership information table if you have any questions about CSI, the CDT exams, or MasterFormat.

I hope to see you there!
Ellen

February Chapter Meeting Recap: Wood is Good

We had a great presentation by four distinguished speakers on the new trend in construction; Cross Laminated Timber. While the system has been used for years in Europe, Portland is on the forefront the CLT trend in the US. There are a lot of opportunities with using CLT in buildings: the beauty of wood, renewable resources, and decreasing the onsite labor. Make sure to check out the video on our YouTube Channel.
