AUGUST 2020
In JAMA Network Open, Paula Chatterjee and Rachel Werner compare nursing homes with and without COVID-19 cases. The biggest difference between the two groups was in the county-level case rates of COVID-19, suggesting that when the surrounding population case rate is high, area nursing homes are at a high risk of infections.
Supported by an LDI COVID-19 Rapid Response Grant, a study led by Karen Lasater in BMJ Quality & Safety found inadequate patient-to-nurse staffing ratios in hospitals in New York and Illinois at the start of the pandemic.
In Health Affairs, Genevieve Kanter and Peter Groeneveld analyze the distribution of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in the U.S., finding that low-income areas have fewer ICU beds than high-income areas, with a large rural-urban divide.
Penn Medicine has received a $4.9 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to explore how implementation science and behavioral economics can increase the uptake of evidence-based cancer care. Rinad Beidas and Justin Bekelman will lead the five-year effort.
LDI experts weigh in on efforts to develop an effective COVID-19 vaccine, and how to administer it to over 330 million residents across the country.
