Principal's Message

We made it through a rainy and chilly week and had a chance for our in-person students to test out their rainy day lunch spots which worked great! We also accomplished picture days using one of our tents. As usual, our kids have been so flexible and resilient with these new changes. I had a chance to stop into several of the RLA classrooms this week and it was great to see so many of our remote Greyhounds!

Have a great weekend,
Ginny

Canines4Comfort Selects Greenbriar Service Dog...Introducing Ozzie!
As most of you know, last year we began a partnership with Canines4Comfort in an effort to find and train a psychiatric service dog for Greenbriar. We are excited to announce that Ozzie (pictured right) is now in training to become Greenbriar's service dog. Ozzie is a golden doodle and is in the process of earning his Canine Good Citizen certification and completing his training to learn how to help Greenbriar students. You can support Canines4Comfort, as they support Greenbriar, by signing up for their Strut Your Mutt virtual or in-person walk/run happening on September 19th. Advanced registration closes on September 15th. Check out details at their website.

In-Person Arrival & Dismissal Reminders
Parents, please remember to encourage your children to use the crosswalk at Greenbriar & Chestnut if you're crossing the street. We see many families cross over at Greenbriar & Catherine which is ok if parents are with children but can also be confusing for kids when they are walking/biking alone. We also ask that parents do not pull into the back parking lot off of Greenbriar to drop off or pick-up students as many kindergarteners and 1st graders cross the sidewalk and crosswalk in the back of the lot. Thanks for helping to keep our students safe!

Need Another Mask Lanyard?
Thanks to our awesome PTO, all students were provided with a Greenbriar mask lanyard at the start of this year. We have additional lanyards available for purchase in the Greenbriar office if your child lost his/hers or if you'd like a second one. You can send cash or check, made out to Greenbriar School for $3 to purchase a second lanyard for your child. Lanyards are available while supplies last!

NWEA MAP Fall Assessments for 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Graders
Our in-person 2nd through 5th grade students will participate in NWEA MAP testing between September 21st and October 23rd. RLA 2nd through 5th-graders will participate in MAP testing between September 29th and October 23rd. Teachers will share specific dates for their classes. Students will take both the reading and math MAP assessments. MAP is taken on the iPad and is an untimed, adaptive assessment meaning that, as students progress in the test, the questions get harder until the student tops out at his or her appropriate level. MAP assessments are just one data point we use to help identify and target areas for instruction. MAP results will be shared with parents via email at the end of October.

Apple Watch & Cell Phone Procedures *repeat*
I'd like to take a second to remind parents to please refrain from calling or texting children during the school day, particularly if students have Apple watches. Getting alerts during the day can be disruptive to our learning environment. If you need to reach your child, please call the main office and we will either relay a message or have your child come to the office to call you. Please take time to review this letter from last November with guidelines shared by our parent safety committee about the use of student's technology devices.

Library Materials Checkout
We are looking forward to our first pickup of library materials! Thank you to our school librarians for their efforts to ensure RLA students have access to school library books.

Please note, RLA elementary students can place up to 10 books on hold, but not all books may be available and delivered on their pick up day. This is because:
Some books will need to be quarantined for 4 days before they recirculate.
Some books that are placed on hold may be previously checked out and not available.
If a student is interested in a book in Destiny Discover that is labeled as “OUT”, s/he may still place that book on hold. S/he will then be added to a waiting list. (Wait time is determined when the book is returned and by the student’s place in line.)

The librarians will do their best to deliver as many books as available, up to 10 books maximum. Please note we may update our procedures and will share these updates with you.

The Greenbriar RLA Library Guide provides information on how your child can reserve books from your home school’s library. Your child’s RLA teachers will help them learn how to use the system as well.

Materials Pickup Reminder
On Wednesday, September 16 from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m., please plan to pick up library books (if requested) and other materials assembled by your child’s teacher via drive through at your child’s home school.
5th Grade Keyboard Cases Have Arrived!
The iPad cases for our new 5th-grade iPads have arrived and will be included in the materials pick up on Sept. 16th. Please watch this short video to learn about the features of the keyboard and how to easily install the new case. We will collect the temporary ‘flap-style’ case from each family at the October materials pick up.
Remote NWEA MAP Assessments
RLA Students in 2nd - 5th grade will take the NWEA MAP reading and math tests between September 29 - October 23. The RLA teachers will help your child complete the tests remotely. The exact dates and times for testing will be communicated by your child’s teacher. We will send parents more information soon about how the test administration will work, but for now, here are a few things to know about taking the MAP assessment remotely:
