Fernway Forward, the Next 100 Years
  • Exciting News! The Shaker Schools Foundation is pleased to announce a challenge match for the Fernway Forward peer-to-peer campaign. A generous Fernway resident will donate $5,000 if the community fundraising reaches $16,000 online by 12/31/18. As of December 21, 2018, the amount raised online is at $10,730. Make your donation to help us reach our goal! Funds raised by the community will focus on the outdoor space at Fernway, based upon input from the community and Fernway Principal Chris Hayward. The Foundation will continue to work with the City of Shaker Heights, private donors and other foundations to pursue outside funding for the outdoor space as well as other initiatives. #FernwayForward
  • The Shaker Schools Foundation will be presenting at the January 9, 2019, Fernway PTO meeting. Foundation staff will share the work they are doing in support of Fernway and answer any questions.
Fernway Residents View Site Plan for New School
  • About two dozen residents attended a Fernway Open House at the High School sponsored by the District on December 19, 2018. The residents were able to view site plans and architectural renderings and ask questions of District administrators as well as representatives from Van Auken Akins Architects, Gilbane Building Co. and the Shaker Schools Foundation.

The District anticipates renovations at Fernway Elementary School to be fully completed by the spring of 2020. Gilbane estimates the project will be completed in 18 months---four months for design and 14 months for construction. Last month, the Board of Education decided to approve spending $3 million plus the $14.5 million insurance settlement on the renovation project. A second phase of the project, paid for by potential fundraising and grant opportunities, could produce additional funds. Members of Fernway's staff and faculty, along with Fernway families, continue to meet with Van Auken Akins Architects and Gilbane representatives to develop the specific project scope which includes a review of floor plan options and site improvements within that budget.
