Congratulations to this week's Heroes Bing and Brandy. We hope you enjoy your up-close parking spot.
A Note to Bing Liu, Science Teacher:
Bing Liu is a hero!!! She loves God with all her heart and strives to serve Him with each decision she makes. Bing does not say a negative word about anyone, but only uses her words to encourage and build people up, as spoken in Ephesians 4:29. (She has an amazing filter!) She is faithful in her convictions, wise in her decision making, and humble in her spirit. In addition to all of that, she is absolutely hilarious! Her students adore her which speaks to her passion for science, her desire to see her students succeed, and her willingness to be authentic with her kids.
At any given point in the week, she can be heard reciting "the 5 skills of a good scientist," preaching "safety first" when doing science experiments, dissecting cow eyeballs with her bare hands, and any other number of things that instill important life skills to our students. We love you, Bing! And you are our hero!!!
A Note to Brandi Sick, Elementary Dean:
Brandy, you have done such a beautiful job transitioning into the MCS community. You have brought your leadership, creative ideas, and numerous strengths to our school and we are grateful! You are always willing to step in and serve in any capacity and your heart for the staff and for students is evident! On behalf of the team, we celebrate you!
Mrs. Sick: You have jumped right in and supported us in so many ways! We are so grateful for all that you do and how you're encouraging our students to make decisions that glorify God. Love, The Fifth Grade Team
THE GYM IS OPEN!
Students are LOVING the New Living Legacy Athletic Center! With gratefulness to the Lord for His goodness to MCS.

Come hear the stories of how their obedience to step out in faith, to listen to the people they are called to partner with and serve, and dream BIG for God's Kingdom has transformed lives (including their own).
Happy New Year, MCS Families!
As we are launching into 2019 with many exciting opportunities for our students, we are preparing for the Difference Maker Grant applications to be available to our MCS 4th-8th graders. The Difference Maker Grant Program gives our students the opportunity to dream about a project they would like to execute during the 2019-20 school year in order to make a difference in the world around them. Selected recipients will receive seed funding and mentoring in order to take their idea and make it a reality! Grant applications will be available to our students in February, but in order to help prepare our students' hearts and minds, we are thrilled to be hosting our annual Difference Maker Chapels THIS MONDAY, January 14th.
These chapels provide the opportunity for our students to hear from individuals who are DIFFERENCE MAKERS in our local community. We will be honoring Randy Barth, founder of Shalimar Learning Center and founder & CEO of Think Together in the Middle School chapel. We will be honoring Kim Bagramian, co-founder of Project Giving Light in our elementary chapels. We cannot wait for our students to hear them share about how God awakened the passions that have led them to step out in faith to serve God in very tangible ways in Orange County. Their stories are inspiring and compelling. Our MCS parents are always invited to our chapels, but we want to extend an extra invitation for you to join us for these chapels on Monday!
Blessings, Ali Bray Difference Maker Architect Mariners Christian School

MCS Parents Invited to Host Students from Zhuhai, China
The MCS Middle School is once again excited to host 34 7th & 8th grade students from Wenyuan Middle School in Zhuhai, China. Last year this was a highlight as our students and staff enjoyed interacting and sharing Jesus with new friends from far away and our host families reported excitement for the experiences they had in their home. This year we have gone back through the feedback to create even better conditions for everyone to be successful.
The students will arrive on Sunday, January 27th, at 4:00 pm and will leave on Saturday, February 2nd, at 8:00 am.
We are looking for families who would like to host two males or two females in their home for the 6 nights.
Why Does MCS Do This?
Given my experiences in China, it is clear to me that an opportunity for MCS to host Middle School students for a short period of time would yield eternal benefits in these areas:
The opportunity to share Christ's Love with those who may not have heard of Him.
The opportunity for our students to have interactions with students just like them who live a world away.
The opportunity to further expose our students to cultural diversity.
We want to build upon the success of our first year of hosting.
Details of Interest
Most of the students have been learning English since 1st grade. They are also savvy on translation apps.
These students are very excited to see what life is like in an American school and home.
We will once again have Cultural Experience Coordinators. They will be available at anytime for guidance and will provide you with resources and training before the students arrive.
We will be providing conversation starters and details from the day for the dinner table, etc. We will also provide guidance on how to integrate Jesus into the discussion.
Because the in-home arrangements will be by gender, the students can stay in the same room and may prefer that.
Host homes will receive $50 per night per child to help with costs associated with having more people in the home.
Host families will receive the students at a Beach Bonfire Party on Sunday, January 27th, from 4:00 pm - 6:00pm.
One night during the week, MCS will host a Bowling get together for host families and any others who want to attend.
If you would like to be considered as a host family, please
sign up by Sunday, January 13th. We are also working to provide a communication opportunity between the two families before the students arrive.
This is an exciting opportunity for MCS, our families and the students from China. Please join me in praying over this experience and that His Glory is revealed in mighty ways!
If you are interested in being part of the 2019 Auction Volunteer Team, please email Barbara O'Brian at [email protected]. This is a great opportunity to be part of one of our biggest fundraisers of the year and is also a great way to get to know fellow MCS Parents.
In The Know
New Law to Go Into Effect July 1, 2019
There have been recent changes to school entry immunization requirements that go into effect July 1, 2019. We are sharing these changes with you so that you may work with your child's healthcare provider to make sure your child is vaccinated (California Code of Regulations Title 17, Division 1, Chapter 4.) There has been the addition of a second Varicella vaccine requirement for entry into elementary school at Transitional Kindergarten (TK)/Kindergarten (K) and/or seventh grade, administered by a licensed California Healthcare Practitioner.
Grade Number of Doses Required of Each Immunization
TK/K-12 Admission
4 Polio
5 DTaP
3 Hep B
2 MMR
2 Varicella
7th-12th Grade
1 Tdap
7th Grade Advancement
2 Varicella
1 Tdap
California schools are required by law to check the immunization records for all new student admissions at TK/Kindergarten through 12th grade and all students advancing to 7th grade before entry. Students meeting all immunization requirements will be unconditionally admitted to school. Students may also be unconditionally admitted if they have a permanent medical exception in accordance with Section 6051. Your child may receive the necessary vaccines from his/her primary care practitioner or pharmacy. It is important to get your child vaccinated early so there will be no issue with school entry. Please make sure you bring your child's vaccine record to the school so it may be on file. Should you have questions, please contact the MCS Health office or your child's health care provider.

Middle School Chapel Debrief
This week in Chapel we were incredibly blessed to have 2 MCS parents share their story of how God moved mountains to answer their prayers of starting a business. Joe and Tiana Bard are the owners and founders of Banzai Bowls, a very popular chain which sells multiple variations acai bowls. During Chapel they shared about the inception of their dream to open an acai bowl restaurant, and how they were met with obstacle upon obstacle. Through perseverance and relentless prayer to the God of the impossible, doors that had been slammed shut began to open. Over the years God has showered His faithfulness on the Bards as they now have 7 stores and have chosen to use Banzai Bowls to bless others by sponsoring athletes from multiple sporting backgrounds. They shared how the words in Philippians 4:13 became very real as they stood upon that verse through trial after trial, "I can do all things through God who strengthens me." They encouraged our students by sharing that, "When you feel like you are at the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on!" When we have nothing left to give, that's when God can show how powerful he is!
And much to the delight of the students and staff, Joe and Tiana brought Banzai Bowls for the entire middle school!
Click for short video clip.
We were blessed by Tiana and Joe on every level, and are so grateful for their willingness to share their story and generously share their delicious product!
