September 2018

Did you feel like you were swimming under water when you went outside lately? No need for moisturizer in these past few weeks! But here comes September, sliding into perfect gardening weather. I'm sure you have heard the slogan "Fall is for Planting" - well, it's true. Temperatures will be moderating, moisture is usually good, the soil is warm and we humans love these perfect conditions. Because of the heat we have really held back on ordering for the past couple of months, but here come plenty of cool new plants and accents for your garden, including a whole new flock of stone/metal herons, high quality tools, and our usual gorgeous pottery, fountains and statuary. People ask us what our favorite new plant is; well, there may be too many to count. Ask us about 'Gem Box' Inkberry, the "Magic" series of Crepe Myrtles, dwarf Aronias, Iteas and Clethras, weeping Redbuds, --- yikes, don't get me started ! Give us a call with your wish lists so we can either add them to trucks already coming in or plan to special order them. Remember, the Eastern Shore has THE most beautiful Falls, so get ready to enjoy the season.

Our Plant of the Month is our native Redbud tree. These starter plants are "low branched", which develop into trees with much more interesting, artistic forms, similar to Japanese Maples. We are offering them for $20 each while supplies last. And Fall is the best time for planting trees, so get yours now!

The nursery is open M-F 8:00-5:00 and Saturday 8:00-4:00.

September is a month of transition for Food production at  Unity Farm from summer to fall crops. Soon the summer squash and zucchini will be giving way to delicata, butternut, acorn and other winter squash and pumpkins. Kale is coming in and we have broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and more on the way.

Two somewhat unique fall crops for us are ginger and turmeric. They both prefer warm climates and have long growing seasons, so we plant it in the soil in our high tunnel in May and wait until mid September or so to start digging it up. Even then, the ginger is still a bit premature: more tender and without a thick skin which makes it easier to work with but gives it a shorter storage life. Turmeric is a new crop for us this year, but so far the plants have done well, and we hope to make some available in late September or early October.

You can purchase our produce here at the Nursery in the main building (during normal operating hours), at the Chestertown Farmers' Market Saturday mornings 8-noon, at Chestertown Natural Foods, and you'll also find our produce in food prepared at The Seed House, Figg's Ordinary, and Germaine's.

The Unity Landscape team is going strong with many new and exciting projects on the schedule.  Stop out to the landscape design showroom and sales office to see examples of the range of services offered and talk to one of our designers or salespeople to discuss your upcoming projects or just call in to the office and we will set a time to come out to visit your property. There are many specimen trees in our above ground area as well as in our field, and the season is just right for having the Unity team move these large trees from our farm to your property.

President of Unity Landscape Design/Build and Unity Church Hill Nursery, Michael Jensen, is an active board member at Adkins Arboretum and encourages everyone to make it out to the exciting 2018 Magic in the Meadow event next weekend - September 22nd.  Please go to the Adkins Arboretum website to get all of the details.
