Message from the Chair - Tessique Houston

Hello Area 12!
Wow! One month of 2018 is in the books! I hope it has been a fruitful beginning for you all.
Coming out of January, with the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and it's focus on service, I would like to encourage you to think about ways you can serve your handbell community. It could be as simple as improving your rehearsal habits (are you usually late?, zoom out at the end?, socialize?) so you are improving your own 'local' community. Or maybe you make the commitment to attend a Spring Ring, even if your whole choir isn't going. You will improve your own skills and take that knowledge back to your group - again serving that 'local' community.
But maybe you would consider serving at a more 'regional' community level. How about serving on the Area 12 Board (hint - we are looking for nominations)! We are taking nominations for our three elected positions - Chair-Elect, Treasurer and Secretary. If you are even the tiniest bit interested in any of these positions, please feel free to contact me or any of the other officers on the board and ask questions about what these positions entail. If you decide you'd like to do it, we can forward your name to the nominating committee.
Our spring board meeting will be held Friday and Saturday,
March 16-17, 2018 in the Bay Area. If you would like the board to consider anything specific, please feel free to contact me, or your Regional Coordinator with your suggestions. We love to hear from you!

Greetings, CenCal Ringers and Directors!
I'm so excited about meeting someone new today - a bell director who's been borrowing another church's bells - and being able to tell her about Handbell Musicians of America and what's happening in Area 12! She didn't know about us and was thrilled to find out about a Spring Ring coming up pretty close to her church in Tehachapi. I hope y'all will decide to attend and look for the folks from First Baptist Church, welcome them to Area 12 and encourage them to join HMA. Here's the scoop:

Hello all!
I hope your January has gone well. It was cold in the LA Metro area this year - even for us Californians!
This year's LA Metro Spring Ring conductor is Kathy Ebling Shaw, conductor of Westminster Choir College Concert Bell Choirs. She is well regarded in the handbell world, and NOT to be missed! If you are considering attending this year's festival, please get your registration in quickly! We are expecting a full house and really don't want to turn anyone away. The sooner you send in your registration, the better!

Dear Handbell Musicians,
Songs Without Words
Most of the handbell music we play does not have words. Yes, there are some songs out there
with a choir part or a vocalist part, but generally we just play the song. So, how do we convey
the message of the song to our audience if there are no words? If it's a hymn tune, we could
suggest to the congregation to turn to that hymn and read the words as we play. If it's not,
we could look up the title of the song on the internet and see if there are words or a
message. We could e-mail the composer and find out why they wrote that song. Two songs
come to mind that have a powerful message: Arnold Sherman's "Gracioso" and Kevin
McChesney's "Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace." Before playing one or both of those
songs, you could tell the reason why the composer wrote the song. Our handbell music becomes
so much more meaningful to our audiences when they know the song's message and, after the
concert is over, you will have several people come forward and tell you how much it meant to
them knowing the background of the song.
