The economic times we are living in are creating terrible hardships for small businesses. It is heartbreaking to witness the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on my clients and the companies I partner with, as well as the stores, restaurants and retailers in our corner of Alaska. We are a close community. So I find myself spending hours every week talking to friends and neighbors about what the next six months will bring for our businesses and our employees.
As most of us were stuck at home this spring, it's not surprising that Small Business Week, which is usually held in May, was moved to September 22-24.
At this time, history is being written and it will reflect whether or not we supported small businesses well enough to avoid losing the economic engine of our country.
Every mom and pop hardware store, every crafting shop or backyard lawn mower repair store, all of them need your support. It's likely that not many of us have a ton of extra cash right now. We're watching every penny. The most value from that penny will come from spending it in your hometown, with your local vendors. Those business owners are your friends and neighbors. They are the folks who support baseball and swim teams. They are the contractors who build the church steps, the wheelchair ramps and help set up your daughter's wedding venue. Please help keep the small business in your community alive and well. It matters.
If you are a small business owner, fighting for your company's survival, know that it's in your community's best interest that you recover. So, don't hesitate to start your search for solutions locally. Reach out to your hometown banks and financial institutions. Talk to your rotary club, chamber of commerce, or area entrepreneurial, networking, or mentorship organizations. You may be surprised by who can help you think creatively, invite you to refinance, offer you a small grant or be willing to prepay for a service.
As long as our communities stick together, we will survive, recover and eventually thrive again.

The Importance of the Safety Carveout

Our roadways, airways, waterways and rails are in danger of becoming less safe in the near future, if we don't pay special attention to changing marijuana laws.
What does this mean?
If the MORE Act passes without a Safety Carve-Out - or a special exemption for safety-sensitive employees regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation and for federal employees subject to drug and alcohol testing - the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will be forced to remove marijuana from its drug testing panel.

This month marks the 31st anniversary of National Recovery Month in which we celebrate the millions of people who are in recovery.
