Preserving a Northwest treasure!
Arbor eNotes September 2018
Opening Night Party & Auction

It's never too early to mark your calendars for our Opening Night Party at the Northwest Flower & Garden Festival. The date for next year is set: Tuesday, February 19, 2019. Visit our event page for info and regular updates about this festive annual fundraiser benefiting the Arboretum!

Fall Plant Sale This Saturday!

Our volunteer-run FallAbundance Plant Sale returns to the Arboretum this Saturday, September 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Buy high-quality plants at great prices while supporting maintenance needs and children's education at the Arboretum. All plants in our Pat Calvert Greenhouse will be 25% off! Free admission and parking!

Insects of the Arboretum

When most people think of insects, they think of pests. However, only a tiny percentage of insects cause significant crop damage or suck our blood. The rest are engaged in beneficial activities such as pollination and the break down of organic matter. In the latest issue of the Bulletin, UW insect ecologist Patrick Tobin writes about some of the remarkable beneficial insects that live in the Arboretum and can also be found in many home gardens.

Hand-Weaving Demonstration on Sept 15

Textile artist Satoko Pettersson will demonstrate her intricate hand-loom weaving techniques during the Seattle Japanese Garden's Family Saturday event on September 15. The demo will take place in the Tateuchi Community Room from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is free with general admission. Admission to the Garden on Family Saturdays is FREE for visitors 12 and under, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Grow Your Arboretum Legacy!

Watching trees mature and spread their beauty throughout the Arboretum is a rewarding experience. Another kind of growth we're focusing on here is the expansion of our Legacy Circle, whose members have included the Arboretum Foundation in their estate plans, through a bequest or other deferred gift. We deeply appreciate the thoughtfulness of these individuals who recognize the necessity of thinking ahead to sustain the Arboretum.

24th Annual Miller Lecture: Panayoti Kelaidis

The Elisabeth Carey Miller Memorial Lecture is the most anticipated horticultural talk of the year! And it's free to the public! This year's lecture takes place on Thursday, September 13, at 7 p.m. in the UW's Meany Hall. The speaker will be Senior Curator and Director of Outreach at the Denver Botanic Gardens -- and noted plantsman --  Panayoti Kelaidis, and the title of his talk is "From Denver to Seattle: A Shared Gardening Tradition."
