PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:
by Tuyen T. Tran, M.D.
Per CDC statistics, from 1999-2016, more than 350,000 people died from an opioid overdose. In 2016, o ver 42,000 Americans died of opioid overdoses. Most of our efforts to combat the opioid epidemic revolves around 1) mandating education on opioid prescribing, 2) integrating prescription drug monitoring programs, 3) improving data collection and sharing, 4) treating opioid overdose (Naloxone), and 5) increasing availability of opioid use disorder treatment. Although we have made strides in combating the opioid epidemic, there is much more work ahead of us.  To Read More CLICK HERE

UK AMA Medical Students Help Elementary Students
University of Kentucky AMA Medical Students have started the AMA Elementary Education Program , in which they visit the students of  Mary Todd Elementary  each month to teach them about their health. The children of MTE come from one of the poorest districts in the county. They are disproportionally affected by challenges beyond the classroom like food insecurity, obesity, and emotional stress. The mission is to  empower them  to take responsibility for the aspects of their health that they  can  control. The medical students' monthly visits focus on small choices and simple guidelines to improve habits like nutritious eating, healthy sleep, hand washing for disease control, and physical exercise.

Kentucky Blood Center Celebrates 50 Years of Saving Lives!
By Dennis Williams, MD, Ky Blood Center Medical Center
Kentucky Blood Center is celebrating 50 years of saving lives in Kentucky.

Created in 1968 by the Fayette County Medical Society to centralize blood-banking services for Fayette County hospitals, the blood center, then known as Central Kentucky Blood Center, was first located in the basement of the Perkins Pancake House on Limestone where UK Football Coach John Ray was the first donor.

In 1979 CKBC moved operations to Waller Avenue. Dr. David Stevens, who was part of the Medical Society committee that created CKBC, was the first person to donate at the Waller location. Twenty-eight years later, he was also the first person to give at the new Beaumont Donor Center, which opened in 2007.

Barriers to Effective Communication
By Mallory Earley, JD, Senior Risk Advisor
To ensure an effective physician-patient relationship and provide quality care, you must be able to communicate with your patients.

Physicians may encounter difficulties in three situations: when a patient is hard of hearing, has limited English proficiency, or is illiterate. Federal law requires physicians to make reasonable accommodations for hard of hearing and Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients. If proper accommodations are not afforded to these individuals, serious consequences, including medical professional liability lawsuits, can occur. Here are some risk management strategies which can be applied to reduce miscommunication with hard of hearing, LEP, and illiterate patients.
