Opening Night to Honor Foundation Units

Since the beginning of the Arboretum in the 1930s, our volunteer units have played a crucial role in the shaping of this beautiful place. They've raised vital funds, pulled countless weeds, and started many of the Arboretum's most successful programs, including the school field trips and the garden guides. At our Opening Night Party & Auction on February 19, we will tell their story and honor their legacy. New Plantings in the Arboretum: 2018 in Review

Last year was a very busy one for new plantings in the Arboretum. Notable projects included a new large bed at the south end of Azalea Way and another large display at the north entrance to the park.  In the latest issue of the Arboretum Bulletin, UW Botanic Gardens Curator of Living Collections Ray Larson describes the new additions and tells you where to find them.

We are grateful to all of you who participated in our end-of-year appeal, helping us raise $66,137 to foster the Arboretum.  A special shout-out to our youngest donor, aged 6, who sent in her piggy bank savings of $34.26 "because I love the Arboretum."  We couldn't do this work without your partnership! Wishing you many happy adventures in the park this year!

Changes Coming to Arboretum Tour Program

Our partners at the UW Botanic Gardens have announced a series of changes to their tour program in the Arboretum. Free public tours for adults have now shifted from Sundays to the first Thursday of each month, January through November (11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.). The free family Saturday tour has been renamed "Family Wild Walks" and will take place on second and fourth Saturdays from February through June (1:30 to 3:00 p.m.). Starting in April, UWBG will be also offering a new series of paid weekend tram tours.

UWBG Class: Natural History Illustration

The UW Botanic Gardens is offering an introductory course in natural science illustration, starting January 30. Taught by artist and natural history illustrator Sharon Birzer, the classes will take place over seven Wednesday evenings at the Center for Urban Horticulture. Learn how to observe, interpret, and document biological subjects using a variety of media, including graphite, pen and ink, pencil, and watercolors. Fee: $295.
