From Buffalo to Jerusalem: A History of American Zionism and Our Complex Love Affair with the Jewish Homeland
|
With Rabbi Dan Judson, Dean of the Hebrew College Rabbinical School Wednesdays, January 30, February 6, and February 13, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Cost: $75 for members, $105 for non-members As the American Jewish/Israeli relationship becomes increasingly complex, it's crucial we step back and examine our history. Join us to explore the events and personalities which shaped American Judaism's attitudes towards Israel. We will start by examining attempts to create a kibbutz in Buffalo, New York back in 1825 and move through Louis Brandeis' transformation of American Zionism and onward until we arrive at the most recent debates of divestment. Together we will debate what it has meant-and still means-to be an American Zionist. For more information, contact Mike Fishbein. Registration for TI members is available here. Registration for non-members is available here. |

In this class, we'll navigate shifts in science, religion, and the ways a critical-thinking approach to life can be in sync with core ideas in Judaism. Together we'll explore the "three m's" of Judaism: minyan (community); mikdash (the holy); and mitzvah (commandments). Prior study is not required to join the conversation. Register.
