As we reflect on all of our gifts during this season of thanks, our thoughts turn to our patients, family and friends.  Thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives and entrusting us with your wellness care.  And to our veterans, we express our gratitude this Veterans Day and always for your service to our country.

We will be out of the office from November 19-24th, so please schedule your chiropractic appointments accordingly.  Please note that BrainCore sessions will continue to be held while we are away.  The entire office will be closed Thursday 11/22 and Friday 11/23 to enjoy the holiday with our loved ones.

We wish you and your family a beautiful and bountiful  Thanksgiving.

Yours in health,

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Brent Reynolds

P.S. Remember, Daylight Savings ends on Sunday, November 4th -- time to "fall back" and enjoy your extra hour of sleep! (Be sure to see our article below on the importance of restful sleep!)

November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month: Take Steps to Improve Your Sleep with Neurofeedback

Sleep is essential for cognition, concentration, performance and overall wellness, including brain health.  Deep, restful sleep enables harmful beta amyloid proteins -- waste products that are found in fluid between brain cells -- to be cleared from the brain, preventing a buildup that is linked to cognition disorders.

For those suffering with insomnia or disruptive sleep, these naturally occurring proteins become toxic, as they accumulate and clump together to form plaques between neurons, disrupting cell function. Researchers have found individuals with Alzheimer's Disease, a type of dementia that destroys memory and reasoning skills and affects behavior, have higher concentrations of these plaques in the hippocampus, the area of the brain responsible for memory.

Neurofeedback brain-wave training can help the brain regulate more efficiently, to improve sleep disturbances and achieve healthy, restful sleep that enables the "brain washing" cleansing process.   Check out Dr. Chiappino's video above, and then call our office to schedule a QEEG brain map to discover if dysregulated brain waves are underlying your sleep challenges and affecting your long-term brain health. $50 off a "Q" this month. 631.265.1223.

It's Flu Season: Boost Your Body's Natural Defenses

businesswoman_allergies.jpg

Flu season is here! Are you prepared? Keeping your immune system as a healthy as possible is key to fending off nasty germs that can leave you down for the count. Being mindful of what you touch, eat and do can go a long way in reducing your risk of contracting the flu. Here are a few tips:

1. Reduce your sugar intake. A diet that is high in sugary or processed foods depresses the immune system cells that normally attack bacteria. A sugary drink can impede the function of the immune system for hours, creating a perfect opportunity for invaders to attack. Cut down on foods that lead to inflammation like white flour, rice and pasta. Incorporate into your diet lots of vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, yogurt with probiotics, as well as fruits.

2. Beef up your natural defenses with natural, plant-based supplements. Pure, high quality supplements, like Young Living's Inner Defense, provide essential oils like oregano, thyme, lemon, clove and eucalyptus that are rich in thymol, carvacrol, and eugenol which provide immune support. Inner Defense helps to ward off yeast and fungus and has the added benefit of promoting healthy respiratory function.

3. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Avoid antibacterial hand sanitizers which often contain dangerous chemicals like triclosan and triclocarban. Be diligent about touching door handles, toilet seats, telephones and other surfaces. Use tissue to open doors, turn on lights and for any other surfaces that are used by the public. At home, clean these areas frequently. Young Living's Thieves line offers safe, natural and effective hand washes, personal care and cleaning products to deep clean without harmful chemicals.

4. Add some spice to your life. Ginger, garlic and curcumin help enhance the body's immune system so that it is better able to handle infections.

5. Make your environment more scentual. Diffusing high quality essential oils in your home or office is not only pleasing to the senses, but can help weaken microorganisms that trigger infections. Use public transportation? Dab a blend of oils on your scarf, or on the neck of a sweater or jacket and pull up around your nose and mouth for an impromptu, on-the-go diffuser.

6. Get solid ZZZs - studies show that lack of quality sleep suppresses the immune system function, decreasing the body's ability to fight off colds or infections. Aim for eight hours each night.  Try diffusing your favorite essential oil like lavender to create a peaceful atmosphere before bedtime.

7. Visit your chiropractor -- Misaligned vertebrae put stress on nerves and impacts the nervous system, impeding the body's natural response to fight off germs. Routine chiropractic care can help keep the spine aligned and the nervous system intact and able to function at its best.

Come in for a visit. We can review your lifestyle habits and recommend ways to improve your choices to boost your health and reduce your chance of infection with the flu or other viruses.  631.265.1223.
Back Pain?  Could Be Your Smokes

Persistent cough is one of the many telltale signs of smoking, but did you know that lower back pain is also another common, but overlooked, symptom?  In addition to causing heart and lung disease, smoking is linked to a number of musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoporosis -- or bone thinning -- disc degeneration, joint restrictions and spinal compression fractures.   Research has shown that nicotine in cigarettes restricts blood flow to the discs that cushion the vertebrae, impairing their function, and also reduces calcium absorption, thwarting new bone growth and increasing the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.

While it is not easy, the first step to improve cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health is to commit to quit.   The American Lung Association's Lung Helpline can help get you on the path to becoming tobacco-free.  Click here for more information.
