Help Us Spruce Up the Planters This Coming Saturday at 10 a.m. on May 5

Join a group of dedicated neighborhood volunteers to help us prepare the planters around "downtown" Kamm's Corners for The Hooley.

This year, our efforts will be more about clean up and mulching than planting new, as the planters were "fortified" with new plant material last fall by the Kamm's Area Special Improvement District. However, we will also work on the planters on Rocky River Drive near Keybank and the dental building. Full Cycle Organics will be providing organic compost, too.

Thanks to our friends at Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, we will have their "Citizens Bank Clean and Green Trailer" filled with tools and supplies for the work. If you have a small pruning tool or push broom, please bring it. All other supplies and tools will be provided. Won't you help us put our best foot forward for West Park?

Meet us in front of Walgreens (look for the big trailer) at 10 a.m. Following the work, KCDC will provide some light refreshments and snacks.

If you can't make it out to lend a hand, how about doing a little spring cleanup near your yard? Sweep up any litter or debris on the street, sidewalk, or tree lawn -- and say hi to your neighbors while you're at it.

Chili Cookoff Comes to Working Class Brewery

On Friday evening, May 4, sample 10 different chili recipes at Working Class Brewery, 17448 Lorain Avenue, inside Kamms Plaza. The benefit runs from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and includes Star Wars Jeopardy at 7 p.m. For only $15, get 10 chili samples. Proceeds benefit the Cleveland Rugby Coalition, a competitive women's sevens rugby team.

If you haven't yet tried the delicious beer at Working Class Brewery, that event would be a perfect time as the brewery does not have a kitchen. Beer and chili are a great duo! While you're at it,  meet the working class guys who opened the brewery, following a passion and dream to create great fresh local craft beer for hard working people.

Free Comic Book Day Offers Fun and Memorable Photo Ops for All Ages

Carol and John's Comic Book Shop, 17430 Rocky River Drive, (in Kamms Plaza) is holding its 17th Annual Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 5. They are planning the most comprehensive event ever produced. And, for the first time, they're flying out a creator, the legendary Jim Steranko, a popular comic book writer and illustrator.

Free Comic Book Day is the first Saturday in May across the U.S. Carol and John break the event up into two equally engaging events, each with its own character. They host a midnight release event from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday, May 4. Books are given out at midnight, but there's a lot going on before then. The main event begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, and lasts until 7 pm.  While the night event leans more toward adults and the day event toward kids, both events are absolutely family friendly.

More than 30,000 books will be given away, with each guest being invited to choose ten. For details about all that's being offered from titles to activities, click here.

West Park WOW Begins Wednesday, May 23

With the recent success of the Passport Program, where six new West Park businesses came together to promote themselves and each other, the team has decided to introduce a program for the summer called "West Park Walk on Wednesdays" (West Park WOW). The new program kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on May 23, and then continues on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month throughout the summer.

The walks will start at one of several neighborhood businesses, travel to another, possibly a third, and then return to the first. Business owners at each stop will have a moment to introduce their businesses and offer a coupon, demonstration, or a taste to educate walkers about their products or services. On each walk, a professional will walk along, discussing their specialty and answering questions. On May 23, it will be Ross Bassett of the West Park Historical Society. See the flyer with the schedule,
here. This event is sponsored by  Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital.
