First Sunday after the Epiphany: The Baptism of our Lord
Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River
Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him
with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his
Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly
confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting.
Amen.

THE BISHOP'S NEW YEAR'S REFLECTION TO THE DIOCESE OF HAWAI'I
(Released January 3, 2020 - Click

|
The Rev. Gerald G. Gifford
(The following was originally released in an e-mail on Friday, December 27, 2019. Service details are still pending.)
Aloha:
I have just received word that the Reverend Gerald G. Gifford died [today] December 26, 2019. Before his retirement in 1989, he served in this Diocese as Rector of St. Elizabeth’s Church (1978-1989) and as a Chaplain at ʻIolani School (1966-1978). In addition to ministry in North America before returning to the Islands in 1966, he served as Vicar of St. Stephen’s Church in the late 1950s.
The service details are pending.
ALMIGHTY AND ETERNAL GOD, to whom there is never any prayer made without hope of mercy, be merciful to the soul of your faithful servant, Gerald, being departed from this world in the confession of your Holy Name that he and all the departed may be welcomed into the company of thy saints, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Rest eternal grant him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
The Right Reverend Robert L. Fitzpatrick

Continuing Series
TEACHINGS BY CLERGY
|
Priests are ordained to be “faithful pastors,
patient teachers, and wise councilors” (BCP, p. 534). These Reflections will be offered over the next few months in the e-News and on the Diocesan website
HERE.
Our third Teachings by Clergy piece is by the Rev. Dcn. Andrew Arakawa, Assistant Upper School Chaplain, 'Iolani School & Deacon Associate, St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Honolulu.
REFLECTION ON THE NICENE CREED:
"For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried."
|
Significantly, the above statement ends with a period. It is not the first period we come across in the Nicene Creed, nor is it the last. It comes in the middle of our communal declaration of faith and holds the tremendous weight of a full stop. The pause that the period brings to the end of the statement above is our Holy Saturday.
Holy Saturday is meant to be a time when we fully live into the pain, suffering, and rawness of Good Friday. Holy Saturday, however, is often overlooked in our practices as Christians. The narrative usually follows that we recognize the passion, crucifixion, and death of Jesus on Good Friday. Then the next morning, the altar guild shows up to prepare for the Easter Vigil. We move from death to life without taking the essential pause needed at that moment for reflection. Boston University Assistant Professor of Theology, Shelly Rambo, in her book
Spirit and Trauma: A Theology of Remaining, writes that “Religious scholars across a range of theological perspectives –from Walter Bruggemann to Alan Lewis to Cornel West—recognize the dangers in reading death (cross) and life (resurrection) in this particular configuration. This thrust towards life can foster Christian triumphalism and supersessionism.” Rambo goes on to say, “such a depiction runs the risk of glossing over a more mixed experience of death and life.”
