"And Peter said to them, 'Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.'"
-Acts 2:38-39
I attended the baptism of my nephew several years ago and I remember the pastor saying, “There is nothing magical about this water.” He was right about that. There is no magic in water. Water alone will not change you (unless of course you drown in it).
However, there is extraordinary power and hope when water is combined with promise of the one who makes baptism possible—the one who baptizes in the Spirit and transforms the heart. For Christians, baptism is a clear promise of the eternal life we have in Christ.
As we remember the Baptism of Jesus this Sunday, remember your own baptism and remember the gospel of Jesus Christ that gives meaning and purpose to all baptisms. Remember that in your baptism, the Lord called you in person, by name, and chose you to be his forever. Just think of that…you are God’s forever.
Thank you, Jesus Christ, for your baptism, and thank you for my baptism, and thank you for all of us in the body of Christ. And now use us to claim others for you.
Amen.

Did the Wisemen get there yet?
We are “hanging onto Christmas” this year. For the first time in maybe 20 years, our daughter from Burbank is coming home today after finishing up the freelance designing and hopefully getting paid in a timely fashion too. Sad to be away from home at Christmas; year after year we'd send her a box of carefully wrapped cookies and Swedish limpa bread. No tree, no decorations, maybe the Santa Ana winds to remind her of winter a little....she'd spend the day with her two cats....Very sad. One year she wrote about Christmases she remembered as a child, and I had saved the piece she wrote, reading it in early December this year. So, her birthday is tomorrow, the tree will be up, every decoration is still in place, even the Advent candles. We have an actual tree here, and always have cut our own at a tree farm, so we got a small one to fit in a Toyota trunk. (Don't leave that trunk open even a teeny bit as the car will tell you by dinging relentlessly until you shut it down tightly)
Today I noticed that all the watering and babying-along have paid off. The little five-foot tree is sprouting tiny pale green shoots all over!
Epiphany was last Sunday, there's no snow for making a pile to stand it in outside.....it looks a little like early March to me. The Wisemen have come and gone, and tonight we will turn on our outside Christmas lights for the last time to welcome the cab carrying our first born home from the airport.
-Bloomington Bird Lady
Ed. note: Last Friday, Transmissions introduced our new guest columnist, the Bloomington Bird Lady, best known for her observational-style writings in the St. Paul Pioneer Press Bulletin Board. We hope she will grace us with her musings weekly or as often as she is able. Bird Lady, along with her partner, Birdman, are long time residents of the city and maybe, just maybe, TLC members of a different surname.

Barb Wigstadt
30 Years as ELC Director
|
To honor Barb Wigstadt’s 30 years as director of the Early Learning Center, TLC members are invited to share a thought or story and/or picture of how Barb has made a difference for them, their families, or community. Perhaps a thought or blessing for her leadership in a key mission of TLC-ELC. We will compile these into a special book that will be given to her during the annual "Week of the Young Child" later this year.

John Hilleren
Celebration of Life
|
Services for long-time TLC member, John Hilleren, were held this past Monday, January 7.
From Pastor Ed's Homily:
Loyalty and commitment marked the days of John’s life. Loyalty and commitment to his wife in marriage, to his life-long friends for which he planned annual reunions, to his employer, Goodyear, and to his church, Transfiguration Lutheran Church. John loved this place and he loved to sing in the choir.

Your Health is in YOUR Hands
Did you know…
- A stroke is a “Brain Attack” that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. Every year, about 700,000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke. On average, a stroke occurs every 45 seconds.
- An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is an enlargement or weak area in the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Males are at least 4 times more likely to have an AAA than females
- Atrial Fibrillation (AFIB) is an irregular heartbeat that affects the upper chambers of the heart. A recent study reveals that AFIB is much more than a stroke risk factor. It is also tied to higher risk of heart attack, heart failure and kidney disease.
- Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) affects about 8 million Americans. Smokers and diabetics are at high risk for PAD. Persons with PAD have 4 to 5 times the risk of a cardiovascular event
- That a woman’s risk of breaking a hip is equal to her risk of developing breast cancer, uterine and ovarian cancer combined, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation website. An estimated 10 million Americans have Osteoporosis; 8 million women and 2 million men.
ARE YOU AT RISK?
Transfiguration Lutheran Church is hosting Life Line Screening on Friday, January 18th.
Ultrasound tests to
IDENTIFY YOUR RISK FACTORS
for cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis as well as an EKG to detect atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) are offered for only $149 (averages out to only $30/test).
These tests go beyond regular checkups. We look inside your arteries for plaque buildup – a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The tests are painless, non-invasive and disrobing is NOT required!
Pre-registration is required. Appointments begin at 9am.
Register today and receive a $10 discount off the package price.

Exodus Lending began in 2014 with a $50,000 grant at Holy Trinity Church on east Lake Street in
Minneapolis. Their non-profit mission is to provide payday loan borrowers a pathway to financial stability.
Payday loans are small-dollar loans with interest rates as high as 450%. Unlike typical loans, lenders require payment on the next payday and borrowers often pay only the interest, and re-borrow, leading to “the payday loan debt trap”.
Exodus Lending will pay off these predatory payday loans. Program participants pay Exodus Lending back through manageable monthly payments over twelve months, with no interest or fees. In November 2017, they exceeded $103,000 in loans with a 95% repayment rate. As loans are paid off, they are able to make new loans to additional clients.
Through our Mission giving, TLC began supporting Exodus Lending in 2017. With your help we will be able to continue and possibly increase our involvement.
