VOS 2018 ski race participants
VOS 2018 Conference participants get ready for the BioMedtrix Acetabular Cup ski race.

Get Ready for Breckenridge!

Dear VOS members,

Happy New Year! I hope you had a great holiday season and a fantastic 2018. I am looking forward to our Breckenridge Conference from February 9-16, and hope that you are too. José García-López and Caleb Hudson have put together a fantastic scientific meeting for you. Our Jacques Jenny Lecturer is Dr. Bill Raasch. A renowned Sports Medicine expert, Dr. Raasch will be updating us on topics such as the latest in motion analysis, athletic injuries, and meniscal and cartilage transplants.

Breckenridge has been one of our most popular locations for good reason. The Beaver Run Conference Center is very well suited to our needs, and the mountain is fantastic with 5 peaks, large bowls and terrain for every level of skier and boarder. There is also a lot to do for non-skiers. The town of Breckenridge has great shopping and a lot of really great restaurants. Plus there is the Breckenridge Bourbon Distillery, snowmobiling, dog-sledding, history tours, ice skating, biking, tubing, wine-tasting, sleigh rides, Summit Ski Museum, fly-fishing, yoga classes, spas, gondola rides and many other fun activities. All we need is you! It's not too late to go to the VOS website and get registered! Don't forget about the $150 discount on registration fees when you book your lodging through Ski.com off of our web site.

A few new things to watch for this year include a Conference schedule app, an app to allow for audience participation during radiology rounds, and 3-minute rapid fire poster presentations.

While registering, don't forget to consider one of the cutting-edge labs that are being offered this year. Topics include the use of cannulated compression screws, needle arthroscopy, use of Canine Unicompartmental Elbow for elbow dysplasia, and fracture repair in toy breeds.   Go to the VOS 2019 Conference Labs page for more information, and book those labs now while there is still room!

While at the Conference, don't forget to show your support for our sponsors and exhibitors. Save up your ordering needs and buy stuff from them at the meeting. They are being asked to show a return on the money they invest in our Conference. If you can't order anything, at least go by the booths, talk to the reps, and ask questions.

Jeff Godwin As noted before, our meeting planner, Penny Smith, will be retiring soon. We have reached a verbal agreement with the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine Continuing Education Office to take over our meeting planning services. They have a very experienced team, and we look forward to working with them.

I hope you have a fantastic 2019, and hope to see you soon in Breckenridge. Until then: Happy cutting!

Jeff Godwin
President

Practical Applications of the Cannulated Compression Screw

Veterinary Orthopedic Implants logo Course Description: The headless compression screw (HCS/CCS) system is useful for situations when a lag screw or pin and tension band might be used. The system allows k-wires to be placed initially to facilitate reduction and simplify lag screw placement. The cannulated HCS/CCS is placed over the k-wire after drilling with a cannulated drill bit. There is no need to drill a gliding and a thread hole. The HCS/CCS can be placed much more quickly than pin and tension bands and is less likely to cause irritation. The HCS/CCS is also very useful in minimally-invasive surgical applications. The HCS/CCS system and plastic bone models will be used to repair a lateral humeral condyle fracture, femoral neck fracture, TTT with TPLO.

VOI provides all equipment and materials for this course.
RACE approved credit hours. Certificate of Completion.

Course Instructors: Brian Beale, DVM, DACVS; Caleb Hudson, MS, DVM, DACVS

Needlescope Application with Point of Care Biologics

Biovision Veterinary Endoscopy and Owl Manor Veterinary logos Course Description: Lead the way and learn the latest arthroscopic diagnostic surgical technique, "NeedleOscopy" and biologic intra-articular administration under visualization. The purpose of this wet lab is to familiarize veterinarians with the ease maneuvering a 1.2mm (18-gauge) needle arthroscope in a joint, processing autologous point-of-care devices, and applying autologous protein solution under visualization. The lab will focus on performing joint lameness diagnostics, blood processing through a newly available point-of-care device, and arthroscopic guided administration under visualization on canine cadavers.

Many advances in canine musculoskeletal diagnostic imaging have been made in the past years with the use of MRI and improved ultrasound machines. Unfortunately, many times radiographic images don't show the problem because they show very little soft tissue, which is a common cause of stifle soreness. The NeedleView scope modality has helped practitioners to improve the ability to obtain a definitive diagnosis so that they could determine the appropriate treatment plan. A complete joint exploratory and / or administration of an autologous protein solution can be performed in a few minutes without general anesthesia on a canine while the canine patient is sedated and the joint locally blocked. This procedure obviates the need for general anesthesia surgical procedure, but in some cases, routine arthroscopy is required. The procedure allows the surgeon to document intraarticular findings to determine the best course of treatment. Pro-Stride APS is a proprietary dual-device system whose output produces a concentrated solution of cells, platelets, growth factors, and anti-inflammatory proteins. The output of the device is all-natural (from the patient's own blood), has clinically demonstrated effectiveness, and is convenient (no incubation, <20-minute processing, ambulatory).

Course Instructors: Chad Devitt, DVM, MS, DACVS; Kristin Kirkby Shaw, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVS, DACVSMR; and Sam Franklin, MS, DVM, PhD, DACVS, DACVSMR
