FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
Like a lot of you, I’m guessing, I woke this morning and turned on cable news.

It was a jolt – I had tuned into a real-time replay of the events of September 11, 2001.

There were Katie Couric and Matt Lauer, sitting together in stunned affect, as they reported that a plane of some sort had apparently crashed into the north tower of the WTC.

It was 5:46 AM and such an eerie thing to watch, knowing what we now know of how the rest of that day’s events unfolded.

It made me think about big, historic events and how we all process them.

I have no real recollection of JFK’s assassination, but I have a vivid memory of the day of his funeral – my mom didn’t make me change out of my pajamas that morning and my giant family spent the entire day sprawled together in the living room watching the broadcast of the event. My parents always questioned if I could actually remember that day – I was really little – but I think some things imprint in weird ways, especially on children.

The moon landing? I was too cool to think it was cool, but one of my big brothers was obsessed with moon missions and my dad said we could stay up together and watch coverage late into the night. I remember my brother explaining everything to me as it was happening and I finally understood why it was all so awesome. To this day, he will tell you that he was alone watching TV that night, but because for me, sitting with him and finally seeing him for the brilliant and passionate young scientist he was, the memory of that night is vivid in my mind.

Mt. St. Helens? I was on a sorority excursion – early morning fishing in the Puget Sound with a dozen other collegiate women and a surly boat captain. Communication was incredibly limited, but what we knew is that we needed to get to shore – fast. I have clear memory of our captain turning the boat around and putting all engines into play as we launched back across the choppy waters to harbor.

I think now about your kids, the memories they will have of Covid and of the school closure they’re enduring.

I hope they have a memory of grownups letting little things (like changing out of pajamas!) fall away so that they can focus on the big things like being together, holding on to one another, supporting one another through the scary parts.

I hope they have a memory of connecting with someone who can explain things in such a way (like Neil Armstrong’s moon walk!) that they have new eyes for appreciation and wonder and gratitude.

And I hope they have a memory of adults going gangbusters (like cranky Captain Conrad!) to get them safely to shore.

Our adults have been putting everything they have into focusing on the important things, setting up classrooms that will be supportive and that will give your students new appreciation for learning, and they are committed to getting your children safely to their destinations – back here in the building, together and grateful.

We will get there.

Learning at Home Resources: All classes will meet online through Microsoft Teams. Every student has an account in Clever (which is our portal to all district-provided software). Inside of Clever, you can go to Microsoft 365 which is where you will find Teams. By next week, students will have all of their classes listed in both Clever and Teams for easy access. If a student gets a schedule change, it may take up to 24 hours to update in the online portal.

To access Clever and MS365, your login is your last name and the last 4 digits of your student ID number with sps81.org (example Tony Smith, ID 123456 = smith3456@sps81.org) and your password is your 8 digit birthday (March 1, 2005 = 03012005). It is highly recommended that you try logging into your accounts before the first day of school to ensure you can get it. Watch this video that provides an overview of how school will work.

Face Masks: Per the Washington State Department of Health, all students attending in-person services and any one entering the building must wear a face covering. If your child is unable to wear a face mask due to their disability or medical condition, then you will need to get a note from your child’s medical provider stating they are exempt. The note should be delivered to the school nurse and you will receive confirmation that they are cleared to attend without a face covering. We can provide clear face shields as an alternative to a face mask for those who need it.

Once we return to in-person learning, students will be required to do a health check each day prior to entering the building. Below are training videos on masks, the health check, hygiene practices, and physical distancing for in-person learning.
