Senior Spotlight: Alexzander Hasting-Newvill
Note: Each week, we will feature 1-2 seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.

Where do we begin? Well, the best place to start is to mention that Alex began his time at Sanborn during his Junior year, after being enrolled in seven other schools, two of which were high schools. Because of his transfers, Alex made up many of his high school credits by working in the Online Lab. Each day, Alex walks into my room, not only ready to work on his online courses, but he does it with a smile. When he came to Sanborn last year, he had about seven online courses to complete. He has worked extremely hard on all of them, that he was able to complete them in just a little over a year, which is amazing! Alex is also currently enrolled in Tech My Way and it has been a pleasure to break through the quiet Alex to see what he can accomplish.

You can see Alex listening to music while he works on his assignments, and he isn’t shy about his passion for playing video games. Alex is a kind, creative, and resilient young man. English teacher, Mr. Cass has this to say about Alex: “He is super creative. He thinks so far outside the box that there isn’t any box. I had him for creative writing and it was neat to see all the funky, interesting ways he’d move the reader through his fictional world. Nice guy, too!”

Math teacher, Mr. Parsons, says that “every morning Alex walks into my class with a smile on his face and asks me how I’m doing. I know I’ll miss these daily check-ins after he’s graduated. Alex has been a part of my classroom for most of my teaching career and I can’t wait to see what he does next.” English teacher, Katie Graham, added that “I really enjoyed having Alex in my Advisory the past two years. He's a quiet student, but very kind and a fun person to chat with during down time. He was also in my Junior English class last year and brought his passions and interests into his work. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors!”

Science teacher, Heather Wheeler, added that Alex is “a quiet, conscientious student with a great sense of humor. Undaunted by a transition to a new district full of changes, Alex shows up every day to class cheerful and interested in learning. I’m sorry his time here will be so short.”

Video games and listening to music are two of his passions, but his biggest passion falls to science. After graduation Alex will be attending Great Bay Community College or Northern Essex Community College to follow his passion for science. He is currently torn between marine biology or bio engineering for majors and will decide which major to follow in the near future.
Senior Spotlight: Amanda Hamel
Note: Each week, we will feature 1-2 seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.

Amanda is a very well-rounded student with a variety of interests, and an impressive work ethic. During her time here at Sanborn, she has learned that working hard, paying attention to detail and performing well in school would help prepare her for the future. To say that you can depend on Amanda to do her work to a high standard and by the deadline is somehow inadequate because her work is often done early!

She speaks fondly of Sanborn and the relationships she has formed that she will carry with her forever. Thanks to her experiences here she knows that there are good communities of people in the world and they will help you to grow. On a similar note, the thing she will miss most about Sanborn is how connected she feels to the teachers and students here.

In her time here at Sanborn, she has enjoyed classes such as Honors English, Math, Chorus, Yearbook and Creating Games and these courses have helped to prepare her for her future. Amanda enjoys being creative and expressing herself in her work and Yearbook with Ms. Alley has been a wonderful opportunity to do just that. Similarly, Amanda’s experiences in Creating Games has likely helped spark an interest in cyber security and a future career in law enforcement.

In addition to her academic interests, Amanda has been a member of the school’s cheer team for all four years and has had the honor of being the team’s Captain since the winter season of her Junior year. This honor speaks to Amanda’s abilities as a leader. If you ask her, she will tell you that she is very proud of her time with the Cheer Team and her relationships with her teammates, who she calls amazing people and her coaches.

English teacher Katie Graham describes Amanda as.“a fun and kind presence in my classroom! She always had a smile on her face and was always motivated to do her best.”

Business teacher, Jeff Adams shared… “Amanda is that student that every teacher wants in their class. I had Amanda in my class her Sophomore year and said to myself I want her to work on the yearbook staff her senior year. I am happy to say that Amanda accepted the invitation to work on yearbook this year and is doing an amazing job with her fellow editors.”

Kerrie Alley-Viollette, Business teacher explains, “Amanda was selected to do be a member of the yearbook staff through her work ethic, creativity and teacher recommendations. She works above and beyond expectations. She is a quiet leader among her peers. She is an amazing member of our Sanborn community.”

Amanda’s Adviser, CTE teacher, Jack Kelley describes her in the following terms… “Competent is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Amanda Hamel, hardworking is a close second and bright should be at the top of the list. Amanda works hard in class, as a cheerleading captain and at her job in retail. Her work ethic and ability will allow her to succeed at the next level. Amanda Hamel is a "Sunglass girl". Her future's so bright, she needs to wear shades.”
Senior Spotlight: Marissa Mullen
Note: Each week, we will feature 1-2 seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.

When I think of Marissa Mullen, a smile immediately crosses my face. From the first day of class, two years ago, Marissa impressed me with her ability to be articulate and exhibit her passion for life, both in and out of the classroom. Marissa is a hard working student, a compassionate person, and probably one of the funniest people at Sanborn.

As Marissa’s teacher, I can attest to her hard work and dedication in the classroom.  She always does her best work and when she feels it is not, she continues to strive to do better. In class discussions, Marissa is always the leader and is very inquisitive. She is a student that brings out the most and the best from herself and other members of the class. She is definitely the leader in many class discussions and Socratic seminars. These are qualities that definitely will help her in her considered major of criminal justice.

As Marissa’s advisor in Student Council, I can also attest to that same drive and dedication. She is a proven leader and has an open heart when it comes to community service and school pride. She tackles many of our projects with a tenacious nature and gets the job done.

On a more personal level, I can attest to Marissa’s compassion. I had a personal loss and upon my return to school, Marissa, with another student, rallied her AP Literature classmates to present me with a heartfelt card and gift. This is something that is not done every day in high school and I will always remember and appreciate that small, but kind gesture.

Writer William Arthur Ward once said that, "A well-developed sense of humor is the pole that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life." Even on the toughest or the gloomiest of days, we could always count on Marissa to lighten the mood. Whether it’s her dry one liners, or her stories that go on for days, she is someone that most definitely can make me laugh...even when I don’t want to.

Other teachers feel the same sense of pride when speaking of Marissa.

Mrs. Golino says of Marissa, “Marissa is a schnazzy dresser and always polite and friendly. She works hard for her grades and is a positive influence on many other students.”

Mrs. Bradley said, “Marissa is so positive and friendly. She always has a big smile on her face and she always says hi when I see her in the hallway. It was a pleasure to have her in class a couple years ago.”

Dr. Conant said that Marissa was very pleasant in class. She has a great sense of humor. When she does not understand, she asks questions. Self motivated.

Mrs. Alley said that, “Marissa is a leader in the classroom and on the soccer field. She truly likes to see her teammates succeed. She is kind, caring and compassionate to all who are in her life.”

Not only is Marissa a great student, but she is a greater human being. I am so excited to see what the future holds for her.

An Update From Southern Rockingham Coalition for Youth (SoROCK)
Hello Sanborn Community!

I hope everyone is staying warm. SoRock has just wrapped up our free Staying Connected with your Teen workshop through Teen Institute. Those who attended learned skills for increasing communication and decreasing conflict, ways to bond with their teen, strategies for preventing high-risk behaviors, how to involve your teen at home in problem-solving, decision making, and responsibility and more. If you missed the workshop but are interested in attending one in the future, please contact us for more information.

We will soon be wrapping out our winter session of the P.A.S.T.A Caregiver and grandparent support group with plans of a third session in the spring. The next meeting is on Monday 12/17 at 6pm at the Danville Community Center. We are currently looking for input from caregivers and grandparents in this position to help us prepare for, and possibly to attend, a meeting with one of our NH Senators in the New Year. The meeting will be focused on filling gaps and meeting the needs of this growing population for both caregivers and the children.

SoRock would like to acknowledge that the holiday season is a stressful one and is not necessarily joyful for everyone. Please remember self-care and stay connected to others. If you know someone who is struggling reach out and remind them, they are not alone. If you are in need resources, please visit
www.naminh.org.

SoRock is a community-based coalition with over a 25-year history of working collaboratively with federal, state and local organizations to help promote, support and sustain healthy choices for families in our communities. We do this by actively working to reduce and prevent alcohol, marijuana, prescription and other drug misuse.  SoRock relies on community engagement to be successful in it’s mission. Please visit our website sorocknh.org or follow us on social media @SoRockNH to stay up to date on prevention programming and events in the area.  If you would like to get more involved reach out to me at sorocknhcc@gmail.com or give me a call anytime at 603-642-3341 x 196

An Important Message From School Administrators:
PTO Clothing Donation Bins
When you drop your unwanted clothing off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students.

Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
