TERREBONNE BIODIVERSITY AND RESILIENCY PROJECTS FEATURE INNOVATION AND PARTNERSHIPS

Last week, AWF announced the launch of The Terrebonne Biodiversity and Resiliency Projects at Pointe-aux-Chenes & Bayou Terrebonne. The projects represent a private sector investment of $3.4 million dollars and, once completed, the projects will restore 125 acres of wetlands with a per year economic value of $1.2 million and other annual benefits including, 280 tons of carbon sequestered, the elimination of up  to 266 pounds of phosphorus and 10,600 pounds of nitrogen to improve water quality in lower Terrebonne Parish. AWF partnered with  Resource Environmental Solutions, LLC (RES) on these projects and  BHP provided full funding.

Project aims to replant Louisiana's disappearing swamps with new strain of cypress

The bald cypress is the calling card of Louisiana's swamps, with its "knees" jutting up through the still water and moss hanging from its branches. 

But soil subsidence, storm surges and saltwater intrusion have killed off thousands of the iconic trees, worsening the rate of land loss as territory once held in place by the trees' roots is exposed to water.  Read more  here...


Local wetlands projects proposed

America's Wetland Foundation on Thursday announced two projects aimed at restoring 125 acres of wetlands in Pointe-aux-Chenes and Bayou Terrebonne.

The projects will introduce a genetically prepared strain of bald cypress trees to combat years of land loss from storm surge and saltwater intrusion that have uprooted native 
bald cypress trees, further eroding the coastline. Read more  here...

A partnership between coastal advocates and private business is leading to the planting 
of 35,000 bald cypress in Terrebonne Parish Wetlands. Senior adviser to the America's Wetlands Foundation Sidney Coffee says it's part of a string of smaller projects.

"These are transitional projects that can help hold the line on salt water intrusion while
